It accepts a stream, routes or adapts it, and can make it available to viewers, a CDN, or another media system. Depending on the software and workflow, it may also proxy, record, or play back streams. It is not necessarily a video encoder, and not every livestream needs a separately operated media server.
What a media server does in a live-streaming setup
A useful conceptual path is camera or encoder → media server → viewer/player, CDN, or another media system. The source creates or sends the live media; the server receives it and makes it available through compatible protocols or downstream services. A server may route a stream without changing its encoded video or audio, or it may convert media when the workflow requires it.
For example, the open-source MediaMTX project describes software that can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time streams. Its documented functions illustrate the range of roles a media server can fill, but they are not a checklist that every product implements. Check the specific server’s protocol, codec, and feature support before designing around it: MediaMTX documentation.
Do you need a media server to livestream?
No. A separate self-operated media server is one possible part of a streaming pipeline, not a universal requirement. A creator can send a stream from an encoder to a platform or managed service that handles some server-side functions. For instance, Amazon IVS documents encoder setup with OBS, while AWS MediaLive documents several input types and modes. These managed workflows still require a compatible source and correct encoder and input settings; they do not establish that cloud services are always easier or cheaper.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A self-hosted server is more relevant when you need to control routing or protocol handling and can configure and maintain the server. A managed service is an alternative when its documented inputs, outputs, and operating model suit the workflow. Choose between them based on compatibility, latency needs, audience scale, security, recording and monitoring requirements, operational effort, and total cost. Available product documentation does not establish a universal cost or performance winner.
How streaming protocols fit together
Protocols and formats occupy different places in a workflow. An encoder may use one method to send media to a server, while viewers receive it using another. Support varies by product, and the names do not promise the same latency, compatibility, or delivery behavior.

| Protocol or format | Common role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Often used to publish a source stream from an encoder to a server, and for server-to-server delivery. | Confirm product support and the applicable secure connection options. RTMP is not generally a viewer playback format in the documented workflows. |
| RTSP/RTP | Often encountered with IP cameras and network video sources. RTSP manages streaming sessions; RTP carries media, with RTCP used alongside it. | Check how the server handles camera ingest, session control, and the media transport. |
| SRT | A live-stream transport option for contribution or moving media between systems. | Confirm whether the endpoint is configured as caller or listener and whether encryption is required and enabled. |
| WebRTC | Real-time audio and video communication with browsers or native applications, often considered when interactive, low-delay playback matters. | Latency depends on the full system. Wowza’s implementation guidance states that media encryption is mandatory; verify the selected implementation’s requirements. |
| HLS / MPEG-DASH | HTTP-based approaches for distributing live or on-demand media to playback clients. HLS can use adaptive delivery. | Confirm supported containers, codecs, and client compatibility. Implementations do not necessarily support every combination. |
These roles are documented in Wowza technical documentation and AWS documentation. Treat them as a starting point for checking a particular product, rather than assuming that every server accepts or produces every format.
Transmuxing versus transcoding
Transmuxing changes how an already encoded stream is packaged or carried—for example, adapting it to another protocol—without re-encoding the audio or video. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes audio or video. That can help meet compatibility or rendition requirements, but it consumes processing resources and can add delay. If a workflow needs transcoding, account for both compute capacity and end-to-end latency rather than treating it as a transparent protocol switch.

How to choose a server or managed workflow
Start with the source and destination, then work through the constraints that can rule out an otherwise attractive option:
- Compatibility: Confirm the source’s output protocol and codecs, the server’s accepted inputs, and the player or downstream system’s supported outputs.
- Latency: Define whether the stream is one-way viewing or interactive communication. Measure or validate the complete path; a protocol label alone does not establish end-to-end delay.
- Media processing: Determine whether routing or transmuxing is enough, or whether transcoding is required for codec or rendition compatibility.
- Scale: Estimate the expected concurrent audience and establish how the chosen deployment handles distribution and growth.
- Operations: For self-hosting, account for deployment, updates, monitoring, recording, and recovery. For managed services, check the provider’s input/output limits and operating requirements.
- Security: Review authentication, transport protection, and access control at each hop. Do not assume that a protocol name alone means a connection is secured.
- Cost: Compare the full operating costs, including compute and delivery where applicable, with the value of the control and workload each approach provides.

- “The server will encode my video.” Not necessarily. Routing or transmuxing can preserve the existing encoding; encoding changes require transcoding or another encoding stage.
- “RTMP, WebRTC, and HLS are alternatives for the same job.” They commonly serve different ingest, real-time communication, or playback roles. Map each protocol to the correct connection in your pipeline.
- “A server that supports a protocol supports my entire setup.” Protocol support does not guarantee support for your codec, container, security mode, or player. Verify the complete source-to-destination combination.
- “A cloud service removes encoder configuration.” Managed services can operate server-side functions, but their documented examples still require compatible encoder settings and inputs.
For specific products, protocol support and settings can change. Check the current vendor documentation for the version, region, codecs, and deployment you intend to use.
