Mina the Hollower is a single-player action-adventure from Yacht Club Games. You play Mina, a whip-wielding Hollower and inventor who returns to the cursed Tenebrous Isle when its Spark Generators begin failing. Who is Mina, and what is Tenebrous Isle?
Mina is a renowned Hollower, a specialist who can travel beneath the earth. She is also an inventor. Celia Schilling, Yacht Club Games’ marketing director, calls her “a whip-wielding Hollower and visionary inventor!” Mina returns to Tenebrous Isle after being away for years, only to find the island’s power network and social order collapsing.
The island’s industrial prosperity depended on the Spark Generators. Baron Lionel commissioned Mina to build these radiant towers, which brought industry, peace, and prosperity to the island. When the generators begin malfunctioning, an evil starts growing near Ossex, the island’s central area that remains fully powered. Mina’s return therefore has a practical purpose: she must investigate the failures and rescue the island before the crisis spreads.

Ossex acts as a powered center, while the regions around it contain routes, enemies, secrets, and generator sites. The story setup gives the exploration a clear reason: every major journey is connected to restoring the island’s infrastructure and confronting what has corrupted it.
How does burrowing work?
Burrowing is Mina the Hollower’s defining movement mechanic. Mina can disappear into the ground, travel beneath the surface, and emerge when the timing or position is right. The developer describes it as useful both for battling monsters and navigating the world, so it is not merely a fast-travel animation between rooms.

Burrowing as defense
When an enemy attack occupies the space above Mina, going underground can function as an evasion option. The important decision is when to enter and when to surface: burrowing changes Mina’s position and lets you avoid danger, but successful movement still depends on reading enemy patterns and choosing a safe emergence point.
Burrowing as movement
Because the island is densely interconnected, underground travel also helps Mina cross hazards and approach spaces that are difficult to reach from the surface. Burrowing can let you reposition around enemies, pass through parts of the environment, and keep moving rather than stopping to fight every threat head-on.
Burrowing as part of combat
The mechanic links exploration and fighting. You can use it to evade, surface at a better angle, and then attack with the weapon you have selected. That makes movement choice part of damage dealing and positioning, not a separate traversal mode reserved for safe areas.
What weapons can Mina use?
Mina’s primary weapon is the Nightstar, a whip-like mace. The February 2026 developer overview also described three early weapon choices. These descriptions explain their intended feel; they do not establish a universal ranking or a best weapon.

The daggers offer a different rhythm built around quick engagements. Those are play-style distinctions, not evidence that one choice performs better in every situation.

What are Sidearms and Joules?
Sidearms are separate tools that supplement Mina’s main weapon. They consume Joules, so their use is limited by the resource you have available rather than being an unlimited replacement for ordinary attacks. Sidearms are found in the field and are lost on death, making them valuable discoveries as well as expendable tactical options.

- Volt Hatchet: arcs forward and creates a shockwave when it hits.
- Gyro Dagger: travels out and returns like a boomerang.
- Recall: a disc that warps through danger and then explodes.
The developer also says other Sidearms can throw, dash, block, summon, or fish. That range of functions means Sidearms are not just stronger versions of the whip. They can answer a particular enemy pattern, create an opening, provide mobility, or help you interact with the environment. Since they are tied to Joules and can disappear on death, deciding when to spend one is part of the risk-and-reward loop.
How does Mina’s progression and build system work?
Enemies and the world provide Bones. Bones serve as the island’s currency and as Mina’s level-up resource. After collecting enough, you choose whether to improve one of several categories, convert Bones into Bonestone, or save the currency for a later decision.

Trinkets
Trinkets are equippable items that grant passive abilities. There are 60 of them according to Yacht Club Games, and their effects can be stacked. You manage them at Mina’s base, the Underlab, where Trinkets can be equipped or removed.

Because Trinkets alter passive behavior rather than replacing the main weapon, they let you tune a build around a preference. You might combine effects that support a chosen weapon, reinforce defense, or make Sidearm use more attractive. The developer explicitly says that no particular Trinket or special equipment item is required to advance through the main quest, so experimentation does not lock you out of progression.
How the systems fit together
Weapon selection determines the feel of ordinary attacks. Level choices adjust Mina’s broad statistics and support systems. Trinkets add passive modifiers, while Sidearms provide situational actions that spend Joules. Together, these layers create a build without requiring one prescribed loadout. The main quest is to reach and restore six failing Spark Generators. Each generator is away from Ossex and guarded by a boss. Routes can differ in difficulty or offer different rewards, so the island is designed around choices about where to go and what risk to accept next.
The developer says special equipment and Trinkets are not required to advance. That matters because route choice is not presented as a checklist in which one specific drop must be found before the next generator becomes possible. You can choose an approach, adapt your build, and return to the central area to manage equipment at the Underlab.
A typical expedition
- Leave Ossex or another safe area and choose a route toward a region or generator.
- Use surface movement, jumping, dodging, and burrowing to cross hazards and avoid or engage enemies.
- Collect Bones, discover Sidearms, and look for Trinkets or other rewards while learning the region’s layout.
- Spend or risk your Bones according to how far you are from a safe point and what upgrades your build needs.
- Use your selected weapon and Joule-powered Sidearms to handle encounters, then prepare for the generator’s boss.
- Return to the Underlab when you need to change Trinkets or adjust your setup before the next route.
This loop combines deliberate preparation with the danger of carrying resources into unfamiliar territory. The exact balance of challenge and completion time has not been independently established in the available material.

How large is the game?
Yacht Club Games has announced the following scope figures. They are publisher statements, not independently counted measurements.

The studio also compares the game’s total number of screens with all of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove combined. That is a scale comparison from the developer, not an independently verified screen count.
When did Mina the Hollower release, and where can you play it?
The live Yacht Club Games game page lists May 29, 2026 as the release date, identifies the game as single-player, and provides store links for Yacht Club Games, Steam, Humble, GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Platform information has changed between announcements. The February 2026 launch announcement named Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Steam for the planned launch, while the live game page lists a different set of platform and storefront links. Because regional storefronts and edition availability can differ, check the current store page for your device and region instead of combining those dated lists into one global availability claim.
A PlayStation 5 demo was described in the February 2026 announcement as covering the opening through the first major boss and carrying progress into the full release. That was announcement-era information; its current availability should be verified before assuming it can still be downloaded.
