Minecraft is an open-ended, block-based sandbox game: you gather resources, craft, explore, build, and set your own goals rather than follow one required campaign. Its main modes are Creative and Survival, with Hardcore, Adventure, and Spectator available for more specific ways to play. Mojang’s anniversary timeline says Minecraft became the best-selling game of all time in 2016 and recorded 300 million copies sold in 2023.
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a sandbox made from blocks that players can break, collect, craft with, and place to build structures and shape the world. Depending on how you play, you can explore, fight or befriend creatures, survive hostile nights, or spend your time creating. The official Minecraft guide, “What is Minecraft?” describes it as a “blocky sandbox game.”

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnlike a conventional campaign, the core sandbox does not require a single story arc or sequence of missions. The world and the player’s chosen activities provide the experience: one player might build a home, another explore, and another work toward a self-imposed project. The Minecraft guide puts it simply: “Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like!”
What is the goal of Minecraft?
There is no official goal that every player must complete, and the sandbox has no official ending. You can decide what counts as a satisfying session or long-term project, whether that means constructing something elaborate, gathering materials, exploring, or playing with others. The official Minecraft overview presents building, exploration, resource gathering, surviving the night, and multiplayer as ways to play.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
That open-ended premise is different from saying every Minecraft-branded game has the same structure. Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends are listed separately on the official site; they are spin-off games, not the core sandbox experience.
What are the Minecraft game modes?
Creative and Survival are the main modes most players encounter. The official Help Center also describes Hardcore, Adventure, and Spectator. Which mode suits you depends on whether you want unrestricted building, survival pressure, a one-life challenge, a designed scenario, or simply to observe a world.

| Mode | What it’s for | How it plays |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | Building and experimentation | Unlimited resources, flight, immunity from damage, and fast block breaking remove most survival constraints. |
| Survival | Exploration and resource management | Gather resources and craft while managing health and hunger and facing gravity and hostile creatures. |
| Hardcore | A high-stakes survival challenge | One life: after dying, you lose access to playing in that world, although you can observe it in Spectator mode. The introductory guide identifies Hardcore as a Java Edition Survival subcategory; behavior and availability should not be assumed identical across editions. |
| Adventure | Creator-designed worlds | Ordinary block breaking and placing are restricted unless permitted by special items, supporting authored challenges and experiences. |
| Spectator | Watching a world | Fly through and observe the world without interacting with or changing it. |
These descriptions follow the Minecraft Help Center’s game-mode guide; the introductory guide covers the standard modes and Java Hardcore context.
Choose Creative for building without survival pressure
Creative is the straightforward choice when the project matters more than gathering materials or avoiding danger. Its unlimited resources and ability to fly make it easier to build and revise large constructions.
Rank #3
Choose Survival for exploration and resource management
Survival makes materials and safety part of the play. You collect resources and craft what you need while keeping an eye on health and hunger and dealing with hostile creatures.
Choose Hardcore, Adventure, or Spectator for a specific experience
Hardcore raises the stakes with one life, while Adventure is intended for worlds designed around restricted interaction. Spectator is for exploring or watching without changing the world. Hardcore’s described one-life behavior is tied to the Help Center’s account and the Java Edition context noted in the introductory guide, not a claim that every edition handles it identically.

Why is Minecraft the best-selling game?
Mojang’s official 15th-anniversary timeline says Minecraft became the best-selling game of all time in 2016. The timeline’s later sales milestone is 300 million copies in 2023. That is a dated milestone, not a current 2026 total, and the timeline does not state a newer figure.

The official site identifies Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, with the two versions switchable through a unified launcher. Minecraft is also described as available across PC, console, and mobile categories, with edition differences depending on platform. The official PC store page names the product “Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC Standard Edition.”
