What Is monectserverservice.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix Its Windows Errors

By VGSources Team 9 min read

monectserverservice.exe is the background service installed with Monect’s Windows PC Remote Receiver (also called Monect Host). It lets the Monect mobile app discover and control a Windows PC for remote control, game streaming, screen mirroring and file access. It is not a built-in Windows component, so an unexpected copy should be verified rather than trusted by filename alone.

If you installed Monect deliberately, check the executable’s publisher signature, location and Defender scan result. If you do not use Monect, uninstall PC Remote Receiver or Monect Host. For a damaged installation, the safest repair is to remove the receiver and reinstall the current package from Monect’s official download page.

What monectserverservice.exe does

MonectServerService is the Windows service name associated with PC Remote Receiver. The executable runs in the background so a phone running Monect can find the receiver on the local network and send remote-control, game-streaming, screen-mirroring or file-access commands. Because it is a service rather than a normal document or game executable, Windows may start it without you opening a visible Monect window.

Monect’s current PC product page reports more than 15,000,000 downloads, more than 12,000,000 total likes and more than 300,000 paid users. Those page figures describe the product’s reported reach, not the authenticity of a particular file on your computer. A legitimate installation still needs to be checked on the machine where the error appears.

Is monectserverservice.exe safe?

A copy installed by Monect’s official receiver can be legitimate. The filename itself is not proof: malicious software can use the same name. Treat the file as unverified until its installation context, publisher signature and security-scan result agree.

Use these checks before allowing the file

Check What supports a legitimate installation What warrants caution
Whether you installed Monect You knowingly installed PC Remote Receiver or Monect Host and still use its phone-to-PC features. You have never installed Monect, or the service appeared after downloading unrelated software.
Digital signature The file’s Properties dialog shows a valid signature from the expected Monect publisher. The Digital Signatures tab is absent, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match the software you installed.
File location The path is inside the receiver installation you recognize. The copy is in a temporary, user-profile, downloads or otherwise unexpected folder. Historical references show more than one path, so there is no single universal location to trust.
Security scan Microsoft Defender reports no threat after its definitions are updated. Defender or another security product quarantines it, or the file behaves suspiciously even though you do not use Monect.

To inspect the file, open Task Manager, find the Monect process if it is running, right-click it and choose Open file location. Right-click the executable, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab and the Details tab. Record the full path before moving or deleting anything. If Windows cannot show a valid signature or the location is unexpected, scan that specific file and do not add it to an allow-list merely because its name looks familiar.

Do not replace a missing executable by downloading an arbitrary EXE or DLL from a file-sharing or “DLL download” site. A historical third-party record describes Monect Host 2.0.3.411 and a 72,192-byte sample, but that size and version belong only to that recorded sample; they are not a current universal hash, path or file size.

Why Windows reports monectserverservice.exe errors

The same filename can be involved in different problems. The practical causes fall into a few groups:

  • Advanced Trigger & Programmability: Dual-stage adjustable triggers with 2+2 rumble motors for realistic feedback. Two top-mounted programmable buttons avoid accidental presses—solving common back-paddle issues for competitive advantage
  • Ergonomic Comfort & Endurance: Sweat-resistant silicone grip for marathon sessions. 1000mAh rechargeable battery for extended play. Upgraded 8-way D-pad with dome switches delivers precise diagonal control for fighting and retro games
  • Monect is not installed correctly. An interrupted update, damaged files or an incomplete uninstall can leave a service entry pointing to a file that no longer exists.
  • Security software blocks the receiver. Firewall rules or antivirus quarantine can stop the service from listening for the phone, even when the executable itself is genuine.
  • You no longer need Monect. A leftover service can generate startup warnings after the receiver has been removed or its files were deleted manually.
  • The copy is not from Monect. An unexpected duplicate, invalid signature or repeated detection requires malware investigation rather than a reinstall.
  • Network discovery is unavailable. The service may be present but the phone cannot discover the PC because Windows Firewall, the security product or the two devices’ network configuration blocks communication.

Manual fixes, in the safest order

1. Decide whether Monect should remain installed

Ask whether you still use the Monect mobile app to control this PC, stream games, mirror the screen or transfer files.

  1. If you do not use those features, skip to the uninstall instructions below. Removing an unused receiver is safer than leaving an unexplained service active.
  2. If you do use Monect, keep the installation for now and continue with the verification and repair steps. Do not delete the executable from its folder while the service is still registered.

2. Inspect the running process and service

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, look for monectserverservice.exe. If it is present, use Open file location and record the path.
  2. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Locate MonectServerService. Its presence confirms that Windows has a service entry with that name; it does not by itself prove that every executable at the configured path is safe.
  3. Open the service’s Properties and note the executable path shown under Path to executable. Compare it with the file location and with the Monect installation you recognize.

If the service points to a file that no longer exists, do not download a replacement DLL or EXE from an unofficial site. Use the uninstall-and-reinstall path instead.

3. Remove Monect if you do not use it

  1. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for PC Remote Receiver, Monect Host or another Monect receiver entry, select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  3. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the receiver and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows. Check services.msc again. If the service entry remains after a normal uninstall, run the receiver’s uninstaller again from the installed-program list or reinstall the official receiver and then uninstall it cleanly. Do not remove random service or registry entries based only on a web suggestion.

Uninstalling PC Remote Receiver removes the Windows component that accepts Monect connections. It does not remove the Monect app from your phone, but the app will no longer be able to control this PC until you install a receiver again.

4. Check firewall and antivirus blocks when the phone cannot discover the PC

Monect’s support guidance specifically says that if discovery fails, you should check the PC firewall and antivirus settings and ensure monectserverservice.exe is included in the whitelist. Apply that advice cautiously:

  1. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection. Choose Allow an app through firewall and review whether the Monect receiver is allowed on the network profile you actually use. Prefer allowing the installed Monect program rather than opening an unrestricted port.
  2. Open your antivirus quarantine or blocked-item history. If it lists the receiver, verify the file path and publisher signature first. Restore or allow it only when you have confirmed that it came from your Monect installation.
  3. Keep the phone and PC on the same local network while testing discovery. If a corporate, guest or public network isolates wireless clients, the receiver may be running normally but still be unreachable.
  4. After changing a rule, close and reopen the Monect app on the phone and restart the Windows service or reboot the PC.

Do not disable the firewall or antivirus permanently to make discovery work. A temporary test that immediately gets reversed can help identify blocking; a permanent exception for an unverified copy creates unnecessary risk.

5. Restart Windows and test again

A reboot clears a stopped service, completes pending installer changes and reloads firewall rules. After Windows starts, open Monect on the phone and test one function. Note whether the error is a missing-file message, a service-start failure or simply an inability to discover the PC; those symptoms point to different next steps.

6. Reinstall the official receiver

For a damaged installation, reinstalling is the supported manual repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Uninstall the existing PC Remote Receiver or Monect Host from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows).
  2. Restart Windows so the old service process is no longer loaded.
  3. Download the current Windows PC receiver from Monect’s official product/download page. Do not use a third-party mirror or a standalone DLL package.
  4. Run the installer, approve the Windows prompt only after checking that the download is the package you intended to install, and complete setup.
  5. Restart once more if the installer requests it. Check services.msc for MonectServerService, then test phone discovery.

If the installer fails, record the exact Windows message and available disk space, close other installers, restart and try the current official package again. Avoid copying files from another computer because versions, service registrations and dependencies may not match.

7. Scan when the file is unexpected or repeatedly detected

If you never installed Monect, find an unexpected duplicate, or continue seeing detections after uninstalling it, treat the situation as a possible unwanted or malicious program rather than a normal Monect error.

  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and choose Check for updates to refresh Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
  2. Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and let it finish.
  3. If suspicious behavior or detections continue, save your work, open Scan options again and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
  4. Follow Defender’s quarantine or removal recommendation. Do not restore a detection simply because the filename is MonectServerService.

After remediation, restart and inspect the installed-app list and services list again. If an unknown program recreates the file, investigate that program’s installer and seek qualified support rather than repeatedly whitelisting the executable.

Fixes by symptom

“monectserverservice.exe was not found” or a missing-file startup message

This usually means Windows still has a service or startup reference but the receiver file was moved, deleted or partially uninstalled. Confirm whether you need Monect. If not, uninstall it normally and restart. If you do need it, uninstall the damaged receiver, restart, and reinstall the current official package. Do not download a replacement file from an unaffiliated site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service exists, but the phone cannot find the PC

Verify that the process path and signature belong to your installation, then check Windows Firewall and antivirus blocked-item history. Allow the verified receiver on the appropriate network profile, make sure both devices are on the same local network, restart the service or PC, and test again. A firewall exception cannot repair a missing or malicious executable.

Windows shows a recurring warning after you removed Monect

Restart first, then check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and services.msc. If the receiver still appears, use its official uninstaller or reinstall the official receiver and immediately uninstall it cleanly. Avoid manually deleting service records unless you have expert guidance and a recovery plan.

Defender keeps detecting the file

Do not whitelist it on the basis of the filename. Update Defender, run a Full scan and, if necessary, an Offline scan. Compare the detected path with the Monect installation you knowingly installed. Continued detections, an invalid signature or a recreated copy are reasons to remove the software and investigate other recently installed programs.

Can you uninstall PC Remote Receiver?

Yes. Uninstalling PC Remote Receiver is appropriate when you no longer use Monect’s remote-control, game-streaming, screen-mirroring or file-access features, or when the installation is damaged and you plan to reinstall it. Use the Windows uninstall interfaces rather than deleting monectserverservice.exe directly. The trade-off is immediate: the Monect phone app will lose its PC receiver until you install the software again.

What the filename cannot tell you

The name does not establish a universal file path, version, size or hash. Historical references identify Monect Host 2.0.3.411 and a 72,192-byte sample, while current installations can differ. Use the local file’s signature, path, installation history and Defender result instead of comparing it with an old size or assuming that every copy is identical.

Bottom line

monectserverservice.exe is the background service for Monect’s Windows PC Remote Receiver when installed legitimately. It is not a Windows core file, and an unexpected copy deserves verification. Keep using Monect only after the publisher signature, location and security scan make sense. For connection failures, check firewall and antivirus blocking; for damaged files, uninstall and reinstall the official receiver; for suspicious copies, run updated Microsoft Defender Full and Offline scans.
