NVENC is a dedicated video-encoding block built into NVIDIA GPUs. If you already have a compatible NVIDIA graphics card, it is usually a sensible first encoder to try in OBS: it shifts video encoding off the CPU, which can leave more CPU capacity for a game and other applications. It does not make streaming cost-free, however—OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes, and the game, settings, and network can still become bottlenecks.

What NVENC does—and what it does not

NVENC is hardware integrated into NVIDIA GPUs, not a separate app or accessory. NVIDIA describes it as independent of the graphics and CUDA cores, allowing video encoding work to be offloaded from those resources and the CPU. Its codec capabilities vary by GPU generation. NVIDIA’s NVENC Application Note explains the hardware encoder, while its OBS guide calls it a physical GPU section dedicated to encoding.

That separation applies to the encode step, not the whole broadcast. OBS must still capture sources, composite the scene, apply filters, and render frames. A game using nearly all available GPU capacity can leave OBS unable to render on time even though NVENC is doing the encoding. Network delivery and other system limits matter too. OBS’s encoding-performance guide covers common rendering and encoding bottlenecks.

Should you use NVENC?

Try NVENC if your NVIDIA GPU supports it and the destination accepts your chosen codec. It is especially worth trying when CPU load from software encoding is competing with a game or other applications. Compare it with CPU software encoding such as x264 on your own setup rather than assuming one is universally better: the evidence here establishes no universal quality winner or benchmark threshold.

GPU family in NVIDIA’s guide Listed encoding codecs
GeForce RTX 20 series H.264, HEVC
GeForce RTX 30 series H.264, HEVC
GeForce RTX 40 series H.264, HEVC, AV1
GeForce RTX 50 series H.264, HEVC, AV1

Codec support must also match the destination. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. NVIDIA’s guide, dated January 30, 2025, recommends Hardware (NVENC, H.264) for Twitch; that recommendation is NVIDIA’s guidance, not an independently verified statement of every current Twitch workflow.

For YouTube, NVIDIA’s guide recommends AV1 for RTX 40-series GPUs or HEVC otherwise. Use the destination’s current requirements and the options actually available in your OBS setup rather than treating that dated recommendation as universal. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; check the platform and transport requirements before configuring an HDR stream.

Set OBS output to fit the destination and your connection

Use the platform’s ingest guidance first, then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not over four seconds. These are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal settings for every destination.

YouTube live output Codec YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or HEVC 12 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps
4K at 60 fps AV1 or HEVC 35 Mbps
4K at 60 fps H.264 50 Mbps

The figures above are YouTube’s current recommended live-ingest bitrates, not guarantees of quality or a promise that your connection can sustain them. NVIDIA’s guide offers roughly 75% of measured upload speed as a rule of thumb, because other programs may compete for bandwidth. Prioritize the platform’s current guidance and leave enough headroom for a stable stream.

Choose an OBS NVENC configuration and test it

  1. Select the destination: In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select the service you intend to use. Follow that service’s current ingest and stream-key instructions.
  2. Choose the encoder and codec: Open Settings > Output, set the output mode as needed to expose the encoder options, and choose the available Hardware (NVENC) option with a codec supported by both your GPU and destination. OBS labels can differ by version.
  3. Set video output: In Settings > Video and the output settings, select a resolution and frame rate suited to your upload capacity and the content. Do not assume that the highest available values are the most reliable choice.
  4. Set bitrate and keyframes for the platform: For YouTube, start with its applicable codec and resolution recommendations, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s current settings before going live because ingest requirements can change.
  5. Select a preset, then validate: NVIDIA’s guide recommends P6 as a starting point for many users and notes that simultaneous encodes may call for a faster preset. Preset names and availability depend on software and hardware versions. Run a representative test and monitor OBS and the platform’s stream health before relying on the setup.

NVIDIA reports relative compression-efficiency figures for GeForce RTX 50 series of H.264 1.0x, HEVC 1.35x, and AV1 1.43x. These are NVIDIA’s comparisons in its 2025 guide, not independent measurements or a prediction that every GPU, scene, or stream will show the same quality difference.

Fix common performance problems

  • OBS or the game stutters despite NVENC: The encoder being dedicated does not mean OBS needs no GPU. Reduce game graphics settings or cap the game’s load, simplify scenes, and remove or reduce demanding sources and filters. NVIDIA notes that features such as look-ahead can involve CUDA acceleration, so high GPU utilization can still matter.
  • OBS reports missed frames or cannot keep up: Reduce output resolution or frame rate; OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps reduces the work required. If necessary, use a faster encoder preset. Lower the base canvas only when severely constrained, since OBS warns that this can complicate capture and asset management.
  • The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity and competing network use, then lower bitrate or output demands to fit the connection. Verify that the selected codec and stream settings match the destination’s current ingest requirements.
  • Encoder options are missing or a codec cannot be selected: Check the GPU generation, driver, OBS version, and destination compatibility. A codec being listed for a GPU family does not ensure it is available in every app or workflow.

NVENC performance varies with GPU class and clock, preset, and rate-control mode. NVIDIA’s SDK performance tables use stated lab assumptions, including 1920×1080, YUV 4:2:0, and 8-bit input; they are not a forecast for an individual PC or live scene.
