WordPress keeps this cache only for the current request by default. To keep values between page loads, you need a persistent backend such as Redis or Memcached, or a supported PHP/SQLite implementation, installed through a plugin that places an object-cache.php drop-in in wp-content. The WP_CACHE constant alone does not enable persistent object caching.

What WordPress object cache does
The WordPress Developer Resources definition is concise: “The WordPress Object Cache is used to save on trips to the database.” WordPress and its plugins repeatedly request the same kinds of data: options, settings, query results, term information, user data, and computed values. Without an object cache, each request may regenerate those values by querying MySQL or another database layer.

An object cache keeps a value under a key in memory. Code asks for that key; on a cache hit, the value is returned immediately. On a miss, WordPress performs the normal database or computation work, then code can place the result in the cache for reuse during the request.
The request-scoped default
Core WordPress object caching is non-persistent by default. Its values exist in PHP memory for the current request and are discarded when that request ends. A second page request starts with an empty in-process cache, even when it asks for exactly the same key.

This default still avoids duplicate work inside one request. For example, if several functions need the same option or query result, the first lookup can populate the cache and later lookups can reuse it. It does not, by itself, make that value available to the next visitor request.
What is stored and what is not
The object cache stores regenerable values, not your canonical WordPress content. Posts, pages, users, orders, media files, and database rows remain in their normal storage. Clearing an object cache removes temporary copies; WordPress can rebuild them from the database or by rerunning the relevant code.

Because cache data is disposable, a flush should cause cache misses and regeneration rather than delete primary content. You should still take normal backups before changing production configuration, but a cache flush is not a content-deletion operation.
Persistent object cache versus WP_CACHE
Persistent object caching means that cached values survive after the PHP request ends. WordPress achieves this by loading an object-cache.php drop-in from wp-content. The drop-in implements the object-cache API and connects WordPress to a service or local storage engine.
The WP_CACHE constant is often misunderstood. It does not automatically install or connect Redis, Memcached, or another backend, and defining it alone does not provide a performance improvement. A persistent cache plugin or equivalent integration must install and configure the drop-in. If no compatible drop-in is present, WordPress continues to use its normal request-scoped cache.

Object cache and page cache solve different problems
Page caching saves a generated HTML response so an entire request can be served without running WordPress. Object caching works inside WordPress while PHP is running, reducing repeated database and computation work. They are separate systems and can coexist.
| Layer | What it stores | When it helps | Typical invalidation concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Object cache | Reusable values addressed by keys | Dynamic requests that repeatedly query or calculate the same data | Stale keys must be deleted or replaced when underlying data changes |
| Page cache | Complete generated responses, usually HTML | Requests that can be served without executing WordPress | Pages containing personalized or rapidly changing data need careful exclusions |
| Browser, asset, or CDN cache | Static files or responses closer to the visitor | Reducing transfer time and origin requests | Old files or responses can remain at intermediary layers |
A cache suite may bundle several of these layers, but enabling a page cache does not prove that a persistent object cache is active. Verify the object-cache drop-in and backend separately.
Choose a backend before installing anything
Start with the services your host actually provides. A persistent integration needs either a reachable Redis or Memcached service with the required PHP support, or a supported local implementation such as Docket Cache or SQLite Object Cache. The exact server, extension, PHP-version, and filesystem requirements depend on the implementation and should be checked before activation.
Questions to answer on your host
- Is Redis or Memcached already running for your account, and what host and port should WordPress use?
- Is the corresponding PHP extension enabled for the PHP version that serves the site?
- Can the web server reach the service over a private interface or local socket rather than the public internet?
- Does the host permit the plugin to create and load an
object-cache.phpdrop-in? - For a local PHP or SQLite option, are the required PHP features and writable storage available?
- If the site is multisite, does the integration document global groups and network-wide behavior?
Backend comparison
| Implementation | Persistence across requests | Infrastructure | Operational profile | Security and network considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Redis | Yes, when a compatible persistent drop-in is installed and connected | A Redis service and the PHP support required by the integration | Common choice for dynamic sites; requires service monitoring and connection settings | Restrict access to authorized hosts, use authentication where supported, and keep the service off the public internet |
| Memcached | Yes, with a compatible persistent drop-in | A Memcached service and its required PHP support | Simple distributed cache model; service availability and eviction behavior must be monitored | Memcached must not be exposed to the public internet; firewall it to trusted application hosts |
| Docket Cache | Designed to retain values between requests through its local implementation | PHP and local site storage rather than a separate Redis or Memcached server, subject to the implementation’s requirements | Can reduce infrastructure when the host does not offer a remote cache service | Protect the WordPress filesystem and review how the implementation stores and locks cache data |
| SQLite Object Cache | Designed for persistence through SQLite-backed local storage | PHP/SQLite support and writable local storage, subject to the implementation’s requirements | Useful where a separate cache daemon is unavailable; local I/O and locking become important | Secure the database file and directory permissions; do not expose local cache files through the web server |
No backend is universally fastest. The useful architectural benefit is avoiding repeated regeneration; the observed result depends on database load, PHP version, traffic pattern, cache size, eviction, and hosting topology. There is no single speed-up percentage that applies to every WordPress site.
How to enable persistent object caching
1. Record the current state
- Open the WordPress dashboard and note the current PHP version, active plugins, and hosting arrangement.
- Check whether a persistent object-cache drop-in is already present. Do not install a second integration on top of an existing
object-cache.php; two components cannot safely own the same drop-in. - Save a backup of the database and
wp-contentbefore changing production configuration. - Identify whether the site is single-site or multisite, because network-wide groups and cache prefixes may require additional settings.
2. Obtain a reachable backend
Use a Redis or Memcached service supplied by the host, a managed service reachable over a private network, or a supported local implementation. Collect the connection details required by the integration: host, port, credentials if enabled, database selection where applicable, and a unique key salt or prefix. Treat these values as secrets when they include authentication data.

3. Install one compatible integration
Install a plugin that supports your chosen backend, or use the host’s documented integration. Activation should create wp-content/object-cache.php. If the plugin offers an automatic setup wizard, use it only after confirming the selected backend and the PHP runtime serving the site.
Do not assume that activating a general page-cache plugin enables persistent object caching. Some cache suites include an object-cache component, but it still must be configured and connected. Likewise, setting WP_CACHE in wp-config.php is not a substitute for the drop-in.
4. Configure the connection
Enter the backend host, port, credentials, database number if the service uses one, and the unique salt or key prefix requested by the integration. A unique prefix is important when several WordPress installations share one backend; it prevents keys from different sites colliding.
Keep configuration consistent across web workers, command-line PHP, and scheduled jobs. If the dashboard reports a connection failure, compare the PHP extension and configuration used by the web server with the one used by your command-line binary; they can differ on the same host.
5. Lock down the service
- Bind Redis or Memcached to a private interface or local socket whenever possible.
- Use firewall rules that allow only the WordPress application hosts to connect.
- Enable authentication and encryption features supported by the service and integration.
- Never expose a cache daemon directly to the public internet.
- Use a distinct key salt or prefix for each site, especially on shared infrastructure.
The WordPress Hosting Handbook specifically warns that Redis should be reachable only by authorized hosts and that Memcached must not be publicly exposed. A cache service can contain sessions, query results, and other sensitive application data even though it is not the primary database.

6. Flush after changing configuration
Flush the old cache after changing the backend, credentials, key prefix, or drop-in. This removes regenerable values and forces WordPress to repopulate the newly configured store. If the plugin provides a flush button, use it; WP-CLI can also flush the cache.
7. Verify from WordPress
In the dashboard, open Tools → Site Health. Review the Status screen for the persistent object-cache result and the Info screen for drop-in or environment details. A healthy result should identify a connected persistent implementation rather than merely showing that WP_CACHE is defined.
From the site root, run WP-CLI with the same WordPress installation and credentials used by the site:
| Command | Purpose | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
wp cache type |
Reports the active object-cache implementation | A backend or drop-in type rather than only the default in-process behavior |
wp cache supports |
Reports cache features supported by the active implementation | Whether the integration exposes the capabilities your site or plugins need |
wp cache set demo_key demo_value |
Writes a temporary test value | A successful write without a connection or permission error |
wp cache get demo_key |
Reads the test value | The expected value from the active cache |
wp cache flush |
Deletes cached values | A successful flush followed by normal regeneration on the next request |
Use a throwaway key for testing and remove it afterward if the integration does not expire it automatically. To test persistence rather than merely same-process behavior, run the set and get commands in separate invocations or make separate web requests. Then flush and confirm that the application rebuilds values without losing posts, pages, users, or other primary data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Multisite and cache-key behavior
Multisite installations can share one backend while maintaining separate site-specific keys. The integration must handle WordPress global groups correctly so network-wide data is shared where intended and site-specific data remains isolated. A missing or incorrect prefix can produce collisions, confusing stale values, or data appearing under the wrong site.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
After enabling the cache on multisite, test both a network-admin operation and a normal site-admin operation. Check that an update on one site invalidates the expected keys without clearing unrelated sites. If the plugin’s documentation does not describe multisite support, treat that as an unresolved compatibility issue rather than assuming single-site behavior will carry over.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Site Health says no persistent object cache | No object-cache.php drop-in, an inactive integration, or an unreadable drop-in |
Confirm the file exists in wp-content, activate only one integration, and check filesystem permissions |
wp cache type reports the default implementation |
The drop-in was not loaded by that WordPress installation or command-line environment | Run the command from the correct site root, verify the active PHP binary, and inspect the drop-in path |
| Connection refused or timeout | Wrong host or port, stopped service, firewall rule, or a PHP extension mismatch | Check the service status and connection details with the host; test from the web server, not only from your workstation |
| Authentication errors | Missing, expired, or incorrectly copied credentials | Re-enter the credentials in the integration and rotate them if they were exposed |
| Intermittent stale or cross-site data | Shared key prefixes, incorrect multisite global-group handling, or multiple cache owners | Assign a unique salt or prefix, review multisite support, flush, and remove competing drop-ins |
| Errors appear immediately after activation | Unsupported PHP extension, backend version, plugin conflict, or local storage permission problem | Disable the integration, restore the previous drop-in if available, inspect the PHP error log, and verify the implementation’s requirements before retrying |
| Performance does not improve | The workload is dominated by uncached queries, page generation, external requests, or network latency | Measure database time and page-cache behavior separately; do not assume object caching can optimize every bottleneck |
How to tell whether it is helping
First verify correctness: the drop-in loads, the backend accepts reads and writes, and flushing leaves primary content intact. Then observe the workload over representative traffic. Compare database queries, PHP execution time, cache hit and miss behavior when available, backend memory use, and eviction or error logs before and after enabling the cache.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not judge the result from one uncached request. The benefit appears when repeated requests ask for values that can be reused and the cost of connecting to the backend is lower than regenerating those values. A site with highly personalized responses or little repeated database work may gain less than a busy dynamic site. Page caching, query optimization, indexing, PHP tuning, and application-level fixes may address a different bottleneck.
When to disable or remove persistent object caching
Disable the integration temporarily if it causes fatal errors, corrupt responses, or connection failures that prevent WordPress from booting. Use the plugin’s deactivation or removal procedure so it deletes or restores its drop-in cleanly. If the dashboard is inaccessible, remove or rename the integration’s object-cache.php only according to your host’s recovery procedure, then restore normal ownership and permissions.
After removal, run wp cache type and check Site Health again. WordPress should fall back to its request-scoped cache. Removing the persistent layer does not remove database content, but it can expose higher database load because values must be regenerated on each request.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide
- Use Redis when your host provides a private, supported Redis service and you need a conventional shared backend for dynamic workloads.
- Use Memcached when it is the supported service on your platform and your application does not require features specific to another backend.
- Use a local PHP or SQLite implementation when no cache daemon is available and the implementation’s storage, locking, and PHP requirements fit your site.
- Do not enable a persistent cache solely because
WP_CACHEis present. Confirm the drop-in and backend first. - Keep page caching separate in your diagnosis. A page-cache hit can hide object-cache behavior, while a cache miss still depends on WordPress and its object cache.
