Passive Mode is GTA Online’s limited protection from attacks by other players: while it is active, other players cannot attack you, and you cannot attack them or use weaponized vehicles. It does not promise protection from every hazard in the game.
What Passive Mode does
Rockstar describes Passive Mode as a two-way restriction on player combat. While it is active, other players cannot attack you, and you cannot attack them or use weaponized vehicles. The feature is therefore useful when you want to avoid player-versus-player fighting, but it is not general immunity from all game hazards.

How Passive Mode affects Freemode Events
Passive Mode can affect whether you are eligible to join or continue in certain Freemode Events. Rockstar’s title update notes and support information describe these event restrictions:
- If you are already in Passive Mode when an event starts, you must disable it to participate.
- If you activate Passive Mode after an event begins, you are warned that you can no longer participate.
- You cannot activate Passive Mode while in a Critical Player role, such as carrying a package, driving a target vehicle, or playing as the Beast.
Rockstar says Passive Mode is applied during some events to prevent nonparticipants from attacking participants or affecting the outcome. Event participation can therefore take priority over remaining passive.

Where to find the setting
Rockstar’s starter tips refer to the Interaction Menu when discussing gameplay settings. The official sources cited here do not give exact button presses for each platform or edition. Open the Interaction Menu and look for the Passive Mode option in your current version; check your edition’s interface rather than relying on an unverified controller or keyboard sequence.
