Pokémon Z was never released as a standalone game. After Pokémon X and Y, Game Freak’s catalogue lists Pokémon Sun and Moon—not a third Kalos game called Pokémon Z. The available public sources do not give a definitive reason for that release sequence, or establish that a standalone Z game was formally planned and then cancelled.
Why fans expected a Pokémon Z
Pokémon X and Y arrived as a paired set for Nintendo 3DS on October 12, 2013. Their shared naming made a third title called Pokémon Z an easy possibility to imagine, especially because the series had previously followed paired releases with enhanced editions. But an expectation is not proof of a confirmed project: the available sources do not show that Game Freak announced or formally planned a standalone Pokémon Z. Game Freak’s catalogue identifies X and Y as the 2013 games and records the subsequent releases.

What followed X and Y?
The next main-series pair in Game Freak’s catalogue was Pokémon Sun and Moon, released for Nintendo 3DS on November 18, 2016. The catalogue documents that sequence, but does not explain why there was no Z entry.

Was Pokémon Z cancelled?
There is no confirmed answer in the public sources cited here. They establish that X and Y were followed by Sun and Moon, but do not establish that a Pokémon Z game entered development and was cancelled. It is therefore more accurate to say that Pokémon Z was never released than to state that it was definitely cancelled, replaced, or had its planned content transferred to another game.
Two comments offer context, not a direct explanation. In a TIME interview published October 19, 2016, Sun and Moon director Shigeru Ohmori said, “I think when we first set out on this project, we knew it was going to be released on the 20th anniversary of Pokémon.” That documents the anniversary timing of Sun and Moon; it does not say the anniversary caused a Z game to be dropped.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
In GameSpot’s 2017 interview coverage, Ohmori said, “We’ve been working with the 3DS hardware since Pokemon X and Y”. He described Sun and Moon as pushing further on the system and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as a culmination of the team’s 3DS work. This documents a progression across 3DS titles, not a reason Pokémon Z was absent.
Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A the same as Pokémon Z?
No. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a separate, later game. Official materials describe it as a new adventure in Lumiose City, the Kalos city featured in X and Y. Its name and setting connect it to Kalos, but do not make it a released version, renamed edition, or confirmed replacement for a standalone Pokémon Z. Nintendo’s announcement and the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A site describe the later title.
