What Is Proton on Linux? How Steam’s Compatibility Layer Works

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for Steam that lets many Windows-only games run on Linux. It combines a modified version of Wine with graphics translators—primarily DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11, and vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12—plus Steam-specific runtime, launch and configuration work. You install and manage it through Steam rather than treating it as a separate Windows emulator.

What Proton is—and what it is not

Valve describes Proton as a Steam tool that allows games exclusive to Windows to run on Linux, using Wine to provide the Windows compatibility layer. Steamworks documentation describes the same system as a modified version of Wine combined with high-performance graphics API implementations.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters. Proton is not a virtual machine containing a complete copy of Windows, and it is not a conventional source-code port. Instead, Steam starts the Windows game binary through Proton. Proton supplies the Windows APIs and runtime behavior the game expects, then maps graphics and other operations onto Linux facilities.

Because Proton is integrated with Steam, installation, game files, compatibility prefixes, launch behavior and many updates are handled from the normal Steam interface. You can select a Proton build globally or for an individual title, and you can add documented launch options when a game needs special handling.

How Steam runs a Windows game through Proton

1. Steam selects a Proton build

Steam distributes multiple Proton versions. You can let Steam choose a default for supported games, or override the choice for a particular title. Different releases contain different Wine changes, graphics fixes and game-specific workarounds, so the version can affect whether a title starts, how it performs and whether an update introduces a regression.

2. Modified Wine supplies Windows behavior

Wine is the compatibility foundation inside Proton. Rather than emulating a processor, Wine converts Windows system calls and API requests into operations that Linux can provide. Proton carries a modified Wine tree and adds patches, runtime components and configuration intended for Steam games.

The game still sees a Windows-like environment: it can find expected directories, load Windows-style libraries and use familiar process, input and synchronization behavior. Underneath, those requests are being implemented by Linux processes and libraries. This approach avoids the overhead of running a second operating system, but it also means that an unimplemented or incorrectly implemented Windows behavior can stop a game from working.

3. Direct3D calls are translated to Vulkan

Most modern Windows games render through Microsoft Direct3D. Linux games more commonly target Vulkan or OpenGL, so Proton includes translation layers that convert Direct3D commands for the Linux graphics stack.

Component Primary role Graphics APIs covered
Wine, modified by Proton Implements Windows APIs and supplies the Windows-like runtime used by the game System, runtime, input and other Windows interfaces
DXVK Translates Direct3D rendering calls to Vulkan Direct3D 9, 10 and 11
vkd3d-proton Provides the Direct3D 12 translation path Direct3D 12

After translation, the Vulkan driver supplied by your Linux distribution and GPU vendor executes the work. That is why a working, current Vulkan stack is central to Proton performance and reliability. A game may launch through Wine but still fail to render, show corrupted graphics or perform poorly if the Vulkan driver or required 32-bit libraries are missing.

4. Steam adds platform integration

Proton also handles details that are easy to overlook when thinking only about API translation. Steam manages a per-game prefix—a directory containing the Windows-style environment for that title—along with installation paths, launch parameters and Steam-related components. The result is a game that can usually be installed, updated and started from the same library workflow as a native Linux game.

5. The game runs with title-specific fixes

Compatibility is not a single switch that produces identical results for every game. Proton releases include fixes and configuration changes for particular engines, launchers and games. A title may work in one Proton release and fail in another, or require a launch option that another title does not.

  • Wine: the compatibility project that implements Windows APIs on Unix-like systems. Proton uses a modified Wine version.
  • Proton: Valve’s Steam-focused package built around modified Wine, graphics implementations, Steam integration, fixes and configuration.
  • DXVK: the Vulkan-based translator for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11.
  • vkd3d-proton: the Vulkan-based implementation used for Direct3D 12 games.

So the short answer to “Do I need Wine to use Proton?” is no separate Wine installation is normally required. Wine technology is already part of Proton. You select Proton in Steam; Steam supplies the build and uses its bundled components.

What determines whether a game works

Proton is a work in progress, not a guarantee that every Windows title will run. Steamworks documentation says a game can receive an Unsupported status when compatibility review finds blocking Proton bugs or performance problems. A game’s result is therefore a per-title question rather than a promise attached to the Linux platform as a whole.

Compatibility can change when any of these variables changes:

  • The game itself, its engine or an automatic update.
  • The selected Proton release, including stable versus experimental builds.
  • A third-party launcher, sign-in service or copy-protection system.
  • Kernel-level or other anti-cheat behavior.
  • Required media codecs or video playback components.
  • The game’s graphics API and shader workload.
  • Your GPU model, Vulkan driver and 32-bit driver libraries.
  • Your desktop session, compositor and display configuration.

A title that installs successfully can still fail at launch, lose online functionality, stutter while shaders compile, or show broken videos. Conversely, a game marked unsupported at one point can become usable after a Proton or game update. Check current, game-specific compatibility reports before buying a title or changing hardware; do not infer the result from another game using the same engine.

Hardware and software requirements

You need a supported 64-bit Linux distribution with a working Steam installation. The exact distribution is less important than having a maintained kernel, a functioning graphics stack and packages available for Steam and Vulkan.

Graphics driver checklist

  • For NVIDIA hardware, use a current proprietary driver as recommended by Valve’s Proton requirements guidance.
  • For AMD and Intel hardware, keep Mesa, LLVM and the distribution’s Vulkan drivers current.
  • Install 32-bit Vulkan libraries when your distribution requires them. Older games and 32-bit components may depend on them even on a 64-bit system.
  • Confirm that the GPU supports the Vulkan features required by the game and by the chosen Proton release.
  • Update the driver stack before troubleshooting a new title; an outdated Vulkan implementation can look like a Proton failure.

Valve’s requirements guidance also discusses the Linux vm.max_map_count setting for modern games that exceed a kernel’s default memory-map limit. Change that system setting only when the game’s documentation or diagnostic logs indicate that the limit is the cause; raising it indiscriminately is not a general Proton requirement.

How to enable Proton in Steam

  1. Install Steam. Use the package or repository supported by your Linux distribution, then sign in and allow Steam to finish its client updates.
  2. Open Steam’s compatibility settings. In the Steam client, open Settings and go to Compatibility (also shown as Steam Play in some client layouts).
  3. Enable Proton for supported games. Turn on the option that enables Steam Play/Proton for titles Valve identifies as supported, then restart Steam if the client requests it.
  4. Enable it for other titles when needed. The same area includes an option to force a compatibility tool for games Steam does not identify as supported. This expands what appears launchable, but unsupported games can fail or have missing features.
  5. Choose a per-game version when necessary. In your library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable the override and select an installed Proton version.
  6. Start with the stable choice. Use the Proton version Steam recommends or selects by default. Try Proton Experimental or another installed release only when current title reports, release notes or a known regression point you there.

Native Linux builds versus Proton

When a game offers both a native Linux build and a Windows build through Proton, neither option is automatically superior. Compare the title’s actual support and update history rather than assuming “native” always means faster or more reliable.

Decision area Native Linux build Windows build through Proton
Game coverage Limited to titles whose developers ship and maintain a Linux build Can provide access to many Windows-only titles
Graphics path Uses the APIs implemented by the Linux build, commonly Vulkan or OpenGL Uses Wine plus DXVK for Direct3D 9/10/11 or vkd3d-proton for Direct3D 12
Performance consistency Avoids the Windows-API and Direct3D translation layers, but depends on the quality of the Linux port Can perform very well, yet remains sensitive to Proton, driver and game updates
Launchers and anti-cheat Requires Linux support from each included service May work through Proton, but launcher, copy-protection and anti-cheat behavior is title-specific
Controller, VR and media features Depends on what the Linux port implements Depends on Proton compatibility and the game’s Windows components
Manual tuning Often simpler when the port is well maintained May require a Proton override or launch option for a particular title
Updates Can lag behind the Windows release if the port is maintained separately Usually follows the Windows game release, with Proton compatibility changing independently

For a title you already own, test both builds with the same graphics settings and display target if practical. If the native build is abandoned or missing features, Proton may be the better-maintained route; if the Proton version has an anti-cheat or launcher problem, a supported native build may be preferable.

Troubleshooting a Proton game

The game does not start

  1. Open the game’s Properties and check Compatibility. Test the stable Proton version Steam selected, then one other known-installed release.
  2. Verify that the game files are complete through Steam’s installed-file verification tool.
  3. Confirm that Vulkan works for the GPU and that required 32-bit Vulkan libraries are installed.
  4. Remove an unnecessary forced Proton override if Steam’s default is newer or specifically recommended for the title.
  5. Check whether the launcher, copy-protection system or anti-cheat is the actual blocker; changing graphics settings cannot fix a service that does not support the Proton environment.

Graphics are black, corrupted or unstable

Verify the Vulkan driver first, then check whether the game uses Direct3D 9, 10, 11 or 12 so you know which translation component is involved. As a diagnostic fallback, Valve documents this launch option:

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

This asks Proton to use WineD3D’s OpenGL-based path instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. It can help identify a Vulkan-specific problem, but it may reduce performance or compatibility with a particular game, so treat it as a test rather than a universal fix.

Performance is poor or stuttery

  • Update the GPU driver and reboot so the new stack is actually active.
  • Try the Proton release recommended for the title; a newer build is not always the fastest for every game.
  • Allow shader processing to complete and compare frame-time consistency, not only average frame rate.
  • Check whether the desktop compositor, an unusual display mode or a background overlay is adding latency.
  • Use a per-game override only after establishing that the default Proton selection is the source of the change.

How to create a diagnostic log

For a reproducible bug report, add this launch option to the game:

Proton on Steam Deck

Steam Deck provides a concrete example of Proton’s intended experience. Valve’s Steam Deck documentation describes SteamOS as a Linux-based operating system and says the Proton translation layer allows most Windows games to run on SteamOS without requiring developers to perform heavy porting work. Steam manages the compatibility tool as part of the gaming platform, so users can install and launch many titles without manually setting up Wine.

“Most” is important: Steam Deck does not turn every Windows game into a guaranteed compatible title. Anti-cheat, launchers, codecs, graphics requirements and game updates still determine whether an individual game works.

The practical answer to the common questions

  • What is Proton on Linux? Valve’s Steam compatibility tool for running many Windows games on Linux.
  • How does Steam run Windows games? Steam starts the Windows executable through Proton; modified Wine implements Windows behavior, while DXVK or vkd3d-proton translates Direct3D rendering to Vulkan.
  • Do I need to install Wine separately? Usually no. Proton includes the Wine technology it needs.
  • Will every Steam game work? No. Compatibility is specific to the game, its version, services and your driver and hardware stack.
  • Can I choose the compatibility version? Yes. Steam offers global compatibility settings and a per-game Proton override.
  • What should I check first when a game fails? Vulkan drivers, 32-bit libraries, the selected Proton release and any launcher or anti-cheat dependency.
