In a typical YouTube Live setup, you give your encoder the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, configure the feed, and send it to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube recommends the encrypted version, RTMPS. RTMP is the delivery connection between your encoder and YouTube; it is not a camera, an encoder, or the player viewers use.
What RTMP means in a YouTube Live workflow
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. For a YouTube broadcast, its practical role is to carry the outgoing feed from an encoder to YouTube’s ingest service. The encoder produces the video and audio; RTMP or RTMPS is the protocol used to deliver that feed.
After YouTube receives the feed, it processes and transcodes it into multiple playback formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions. Your encoder’s output settings therefore describe what you send to YouTube, not every format in which viewers will watch.
The parts of the connection
- Video and audio source: For example, a camera and microphone, a game capture setup, or other material routed into an encoder.
- Encoder: Software or hardware that prepares the audio-and-video feed and sends it using a protocol the encoder supports.
- YouTube ingest details: The server or stream URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room.
- YouTube Live: Receives the feed, provides stream-health information, and makes the broadcast available for viewer playback after the stream is started in the relevant workflow.
How to send an RTMP or RTMPS feed to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and set up a live stream. Go to Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to broadcast. Find its server or stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Choose the protocol and enter the ingest details in your encoder. Select YouTube if the encoder offers it as a destination, or enter the server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
- Configure the outgoing feed. Choose a supported video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format. Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for the bitrate recommendation that matches your codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every feed.
- Start sending from the encoder and check Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health information. When your chosen workflow requires it, start the broadcast in Live Control Room as well as sending the encoder feed.
- Test before an important broadcast. Send a representative section that includes speech or other audio and visible motion. Confirm that the preview, sound, and stream health are acceptable before relying on the setup live.
Settings that matter before you go live
YouTube’s encoder-settings guide, checked on October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s platform settings and recommendations, and may change; check the current guidance for your chosen combination before a broadcast.

Bitrate depends on the whole configuration
Match bitrate to the video codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a number in isolation. As examples from the YouTube settings page checked on October 3, 2026, its table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. Those are YouTube recommendations for those specific combinations, not universal requirements or independent performance measurements.
Your internet connection must sustain the outgoing upload bitrate. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing a stream quality the connection can support. If the connection cannot reliably maintain the selected settings, reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.

Ingest quality is not viewer playback quality
YouTube detects the encoder’s incoming settings and transcodes the feed into multiple output formats. An encoder sending one chosen resolution does not mean every viewer receives that exact format; playback depends on YouTube’s processing and the viewer’s device and connection.
For 2160p/4K streams, YouTube’s current guidance says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable and the stream is set to normal latency. Factor that platform limitation into your production plan if interaction timing matters.

RTMP or RTMPS: which should you choose?
Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it; the connection’s stream data is encrypted into and through Google’s servers. Ordinary RTMP does not provide that secure extension.
Check the encoder’s protocol support before configuring the destination. The stream URL and key must be entered in the appropriate fields, and the encoder must actually send using the selected protocol. If RTMPS is unavailable in your encoder, confirm the supported options and use a YouTube-compatible configuration rather than assuming every encoder implements the same choices.

When HLS may be a better fit
RTMP and HLS are not interchangeable in every YouTube workflow. YouTube documents HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS sends video in segments, while RTMP sends a continuous stream; YouTube says HLS has higher latency.
Choose based on encoder compatibility, HDR or codec requirements, and how much latency your production can tolerate. YouTube also notes that HDR playback depends on supported devices and display settings, and that the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Do not use the preview’s color appearance alone to judge HDR playback.

Protect the YouTube stream key
Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address for the stream. Do not publish it in a screenshot, tutorial, chat, or public document. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder before sending the feed again.
Troubleshooting a YouTube ingest connection
No incoming preview in Live Control Room
- Confirm the encoder is actively sending, not merely configured.
- Check that the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- Verify that the encoder is using the configured protocol and that it supports the settings you selected.
- If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder with the replacement.
Unstable, buffering, or poor-quality feed
- Test sustainable upload capacity and compare it with the encoder’s outgoing bitrate.
- Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If the connection cannot sustain the settings, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test the revised feed.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream-health information while the encoder is sending.
Video or audio is missing or incompatible
- Check the encoder’s output codec against YouTube’s current supported settings.
- Confirm that the audio track is enabled and uses a supported format such as AAC or MP3.
- Test with representative audio and motion before the event so that a static or silent preview does not conceal a production problem.
HDR or an unsupported codec is required
Check whether your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS workflow or a supported RTMP/RTMPS HDR configuration. If you use HLS, account for its higher latency; for HDR, remember that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors.
RTMP does not decide whether your stream is allowed
RTMP or RTMPS describes how an encoder feed reaches YouTube; it does not grant rights to the material in the broadcast or override YouTube’s live-streaming rules. Before streaming music, gameplay, clips, or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights or permissions you need and follow YouTube’s applicable policies. Test the technical feed separately from checking that the content is suitable to broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should keep looping, StreamNeo is a different workflow from sending a live encoder feed over RTMP: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
Quick Recap
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
