Sakura Wars is SEGA’s game and multimedia franchise about a theater troupe that doubles as a military defense force in a steampunk version of Japan. Its stories combine character-focused adventure and relationship-building with battles against threats to the city. The 2019 game—released in Japan as Shin Sakura Wars and in the West as Sakura Wars—reintroduces the premise with a new cast and action combat.
What is Sakura Wars?
Sakura Wars, known in Japanese as Sakura Taisen, began with a game released for Sega Saturn in Japan on September 27, 1996. SEGA describes the setting as a fictional Taishō era with steampunk technology. The central idea is that a combat unit also operates as a theater troupe: its members entertain the public in peacetime and defend their city when danger appears. The original unit protects Tokyo and performs at the Imperial Theater. (SEGA’s series history; SEGA announcement, December 13, 2019)
Theater life is more than a backdrop. The characters’ friendships and trust shape the drama and the player’s interactions with them, while combat gives the troupe’s defense role a practical purpose. The result sits between a character-driven adventure and a mecha action story rather than being only a war game or a stage-performance simulator.
What is the story of the 2019 Sakura Wars?
The 2019 game takes place in an alternate, steampunk 1940s Tokyo. Seijuro Kamiyama becomes captain of the new Flower Division, a theater troupe that also serves as the city’s defense force. The division is struggling, so Kamiyama must help restore its reputation while protecting Tokyo and competing in the Combat Revue World Games. (SEGA’s official game site)

The game uses the series’ LIPS dialogue system, in which both what the player says and how they respond affect relationships. Character scenes lead into battles fought with giant, steam-powered mecha. This entry shifts the series’ combat toward action rather than the tactical battles associated with earlier games; producer Tetsu Katano discussed that change in SEGA of America’s PlayStation Blog coverage.
Is the new Sakura Wars connected to the old games?
SEGA of America described the 2019 game as “an all-new narrative designed to be enjoyed by both parties”—newcomers and longtime fans. It is a new beginning with a new cast and story, not a direct continuation of the earlier cast’s story in the ordinary sense of a numbered sequel. The shared franchise identity is in the theater-and-defense premise and series traditions, rather than a requirement to know the original plot first. (PlayStation Blog, February 13, 2020)

SEGA presented it for newcomers as well as existing fans, and its new narrative does not require familiarity with the original game to understand Kamiyama’s Flower Division.

What else is part of the Sakura Wars franchise?
Sakura Wars grew beyond games into television and theatrical animation, stage performances, comics, books, and CDs. SEGA’s official history records game and media releases, but those categories do not establish where any particular work is currently available to watch, read, or buy. Check the specific title and region rather than assuming the whole franchise is accessible on one service. (SEGA’s official history; SEGA announcement)
How popular is Sakura Wars?
In a December 13, 2019 announcement, SEGA said cumulative domestic shipments for the Sakura Wars series and related works had surpassed four million. That figure is for Japan’s domestic shipments across the series and related works, not worldwide sales and not sales of the 2019 game alone. (SEGA, December 13, 2019)
