The headset’s embedded cameras capture the room and display that live feed on its internal screens. Press the headset’s Function button to switch to it; on PS5, the system can also switch automatically when you leave the configured play area.
What See-Through View actually is
Sony calls the feature See-Through View, but you are not literally looking through transparent lenses. It is video passthrough: cameras on the headset capture the environment, and the headset shows that camera image to you.
That makes it useful for quick orientation rather than as a separate game mode. You can check where a controller is, see whether someone has entered the room or locate the exit without removing the headset. The view is processed camera video, so it should not be treated as identical to unaided eyesight.

Passthrough simply means seeing camera video. Mixed reality means virtual content is deliberately composited into or anchored to the physical room. On PS5, Sony’s documented See-Through View behavior is primarily a switch between VR content and the surroundings camera feed; do not assume that ordinary PS VR2 games provide a general-purpose mixed-reality overlay.

How PSVR2 creates the view
- Four cameras embedded in the headset capture the environment and support inside-out tracking of the headset and Sense controllers.
- The captured image is processed by the headset and displayed on its internal OLED screens.
- The Function button provides a quick switch between the current VR experience and the camera view.
Sony lists four tracking cameras, separate infrared cameras for eye tracking, OLED displays measuring 2,000 × 2,040 pixels per eye, 90 Hz and 120 Hz display modes, and an approximately 110-degree headset field of view in its PS VR2 technical specifications. Those are headset specifications—not a published resolution, latency or effective field-of-view specification for the passthrough camera image. Lighting, camera visibility, image processing and display characteristics can affect what you see.
How to turn on See-Through View on PS5
- Put on PS VR2 and power it on.
- Briefly press the Function button on the underside of the headset.
- The display switches from VR content to See-Through View.
- Press the Function button again to switch back when the current system and software state allow it.
You can also use the PS5 interface: press the PS button on a controller, open the Control Center, select the PS VR2 quick-settings card and choose See-Through View. Sony documents both methods in its PS VR2 support information and feature overview.
The Function button can be reassigned. If it does nothing, check its assignment in PS VR2 settings before assuming the cameras have failed.
What happens at the play-area boundary?
See-Through View is part of PS VR2’s safety workflow, but it does not replace a correctly scanned room.

When you approach the boundary, PS VR2 displays a warning. If you leave the play area, the game pauses and the display switches to your surroundings. This gives you a chance to reorient yourself before continuing.

On PC
Leaving the play area does not automatically activate See-Through View. Press the Function button yourself. Switching views also does not automatically pause the VR game on PC, so pause or save first when necessary. Sony documents these differences in its PS5-versus-PC comparison and PC setup guidance.
How to set or reset the PS5 play area
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select PlayStation VR2.
- Choose Set Play Area.
- Scan the room with the headset cameras.
- Use the PS VR2 Sense controllers to refine the boundary.
Sony specifies an approximately 2 m × 2 m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in) minimum for room-scale play. A boundary is a software warning, not a physical barrier: furniture can move, and a person or pet can enter after the scan. Recheck the area whenever the room layout changes. Cinematic Mode does not use VR play areas, according to Sony’s support documentation.
What the feature is good for
- Finding a controller, phone or other nearby item.
- Speaking to someone without removing the headset.
- Checking whether a child, pet or another person has entered the room.
- Locating furniture, a doorway or the room exit.
- Checking the headset cable or your position before returning to VR.
- Briefly orienting yourself after losing track of where you are.
Use it for awareness and short checks. It is not a reason to walk around normally while wearing the headset, read small text, handle delicate objects or skip clearing the floor and cable path.

Limitations and safety considerations
- The camera image is not the same as normal human vision; fine cable details, small text and low-contrast objects may be difficult to inspect.
- Room lighting and the cameras’ view affect usefulness. If the image is unclear, remove the headset before doing anything that requires precise sight.
- The physical headset and cable remain on your body. See-Through View does not remove trip hazards.
- A configured boundary cannot identify every obstacle or prevent collisions.
For a poor or unusable view, improve the room lighting, clean the exterior camera area using Sony’s cleaning guidance, reseat the headset, rerun the play-area scan and check connections. On PC, also check the required adapter, USB and DisplayPort path, and confirm that the PlayStation VR2 app and SteamVR are installed. Treat these as practical checks rather than a guaranteed diagnosis for every fault.

PC use requires the official PS VR2 PC adapter, a compatible Windows PC, Steam, SteamVR, the PlayStation VR2 app and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. PS VR2 is compatible with PS5, not PS4, and original PS VR content is not compatible with PS VR2. The adapter became available from select retailers on August 7, 2024; that date does not establish current stock or pricing.
Does See-Through View record your room?
See-Through View is presented as a live viewing function. Sony’s standard feature documentation does not describe it as a user-facing room-recording tool, so do not assume that activating it creates a saved video file. Detailed recording, storage or transmission claims require a current, dedicated Sony privacy or support statement.
If the Function button does nothing
- Confirm the headset is powered on and press the button briefly.
- Check whether the Function button was reassigned.
- Open the PS5 Control Center and use the PS VR2 quick-settings card.
- Check the headset connection and restart the PS5 or PC setup.
- On PC, verify the official adapter, DisplayPort connection, PlayStation VR2 app and SteamVR installation.
See-Through View is sufficient for quick surroundings checks and boundary awareness. If you need continuous, high-confidence real-world vision or a broad mixed-reality workspace, remove the headset for precise tasks or consider hardware designed around that use case instead.

Does PSVR2 have transparent lenses?
No. See-Through View uses cameras and the headset’s display screens; it is not optical see-through technology.
Can I use See-Through View without a PS5?
Yes, with PS VR2 connected to a compatible PC through the official PC adapter and required software. PC boundary behavior differs: leaving the play area does not automatically switch the view or pause the game.
Is See-Through View the same as mixed reality?
No. It is camera passthrough. Mixed reality additionally composites or anchors virtual objects in the physical room, which is not the standard documented PS5 See-Through View function.
Can it replace setting up a play area?
No. See-Through View helps you check your surroundings, while the play area provides the software boundary and safety warnings.
