Its published premise puts you in the United Empire of Earth (UEE) Navy, living and working with a crew during a galactic war. It is a separate campaign from Star Citizen’s persistent online universe, though the two share a setting and have planned connections. RSI says Squadron 42 is still in development and unavailable to download; Steam currently lists Q2 2027 as its planned release window.
What is Squadron 42?
Squadron 42 is the single-player, story-led game set in the wider Star Citizen universe. Its publisher-listed synopsis describes a player who enlists in the UEE Navy and serves alongside a crew during a galactic war. The premise is military science fiction, presented as a cinematic space adventure rather than an account of the persistent online world.

RSI chairman Chris Roberts described the intended experience as a player-led adventure involving relationships with characters, battles, and cinematic set pieces. That is the developer’s stated creative ambition, not an independent assessment of a finished game: Roberts’s Letter from the Chairman.

What is the story and setting?
The published synopsis establishes the broad setup: you are a Navy recruit living and working with your crew in the middle of a galactic war. It points to several environments, but does not provide a chapter-by-chapter plot, a confirmed ending, or enough detail to establish specific events or characters.

Where the campaign takes place
The Steam listing names fighter cockpits, capital ships, space stations, frontier outposts, and the front lines as settings. Together, these suggest a campaign that moves between combat and life among the crew, but the synopsis does not explain how much time the game spends in each location.
How does Squadron 42 fit into Star Citizen?
They are distinct play experiences in the same fictional universe. Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign; Star Citizen is the persistent online universe. That 2016 explanation also described Squadron 42 performance as something intended to affect a player’s Star Citizen career. Treat that as a historical description of the planned connection, not a guarantee about current progression or account entitlements. RSI’s Get Started Checklist distinguishes a standalone Squadron 42 pledge from packages that include Star Citizen. Check the current package details before buying; the older explanation should not be used to infer current prices or exactly what a package includes.
