Stream sniping is when someone deliberately uses a live broadcast to gain an advantage in a multiplayer game or disrupt the streamer. To reduce the risk, streamers can delay the broadcast and use game-specific streamer or privacy settings. These steps limit what a viewer can learn in real time, but they cannot guarantee prevention or prove that a suspicious opponent was sniping.
What counts as stream sniping?
Stream sniping is more than an opponent happening to find or defeat a streamer. The defining element is deliberate use of the broadcast—such as its gameplay or timing—to gain an in-game advantage or disrupt the stream. Twitch’s Community Guidelines prohibit deliberate, non-consensual in-game stream sniping that uses another person’s broadcast for competitive advantage and disrupts their broadcast. A suspicious encounter alone does not establish intent. Avoid publicly accusing a player based only on a coincidence; report suspected conduct through the relevant platform’s tools and include evidence where available. Rules and enforcement depend on the platform, game, and context.
How can streamers reduce the risk?
Add a delay to the broadcast
A stream delay creates a buffer between what happens in-game and when viewers see it. Twitch says 30–60 seconds is common for many competitive gaming scenarios; that is platform guidance, not a guaranteed or universally ideal setting. A longer delay can make chat feel less immediate, and Twitch notes that software-based buffering uses more memory. A delay also is not a way to censor content already in the buffer. Any Twitch broadcaster can add delay if their broadcasting software supports it. Twitch Partners can configure delay in Stream Manager, with a native limit of up to 15 minutes. In most broadcasting software, changing the delay may require stopping and restarting the stream, so check the software’s current instructions and test the setup before a competitive session.
Use game-specific privacy or streamer settings
Where available, a game’s streamer mode or privacy controls can hide identifying details, matchmaking information, or other useful signals. These controls differ across games and even between modes or experiences, so check the settings for the specific game you play.

Combine controls when one is not enough
Broadcast delay and in-game privacy settings address different kinds of exposure. If available, using both can add protection: delay makes information arrive later, while game controls can conceal details within the game. The tradeoff is that delay affects live interaction, and game controls vary in what they hide.
Consider location privacy for IRL streams
Twitch also identifies real-world location privacy as a reason to consider delay: a buffer can make it harder for viewers to identify a precise location in real time. Treat it as one possible risk-reduction measure, not a complete personal-safety plan.

How should you report suspected stream sniping?
Use the reporting tools provided by the platform or game, and share relevant evidence rather than relying on a public accusation. Twitch’s enforcement explainer says repeated violations in the same policy category can lead to longer suspensions within the applicable violation window; it does not establish a fixed penalty for a particular report.
