The 256 glitch is the garbled split-screen that appears on board 256 of the original arcade Pac-Man. A bug in the bonus-fruit drawing routine corrupts part of the display, and too few dots remain for the board to meet its normal completion requirement. The game keeps running, but the unmodified board cannot be cleared through ordinary play.
What does the Pac-Man level 256 glitch look like?
The left side of the maze remains largely recognizable; the right side becomes a jumble of letters, numbers and other graphics. Players commonly call it the “split screen.” It is also known as the “kill screen,” because normal level progression effectively ends there.

The display corruption is not the same as the whole game crashing. Pac-Man can still move and play continues, but the board is no longer a normal, fully playable maze.

In the original arcade implementation, the board counter is stored in one byte. The routine that draws the bonus fruit uses the counter to decide how many symbols to draw. At board 256, the counter reaches its limit; the routine’s increment-and-loop behavior then causes it to run 256 times instead of drawing the small expected set of fruit symbols.

As the routine reads beyond the expected fruit data, it writes unintended values into video memory. Those writes scramble much of the right side of the screen. A published analysis based on disassembly of the original code explains the routine, and Chris Lomont’s October 2008 emulation paper independently describes the fruit-routine overflow and a code fix that permits progression: Lomont’s paper.
This explanation applies to the original arcade code. It should not be assumed that every port, emulator setting or modern cabinet uses the same code or reproduces the glitch.

Why can’t you clear board 256 normally?
A published analysis of the original code counts 114 dots on the left, nine on the right and one bonus key: 124 dot-and-bonus items available on the corrupted board. The normal level-clear requirement is 244 dots eaten. Even collecting every available item falls well short, so the original board cannot trigger its ordinary clear condition.
Can a modified version get past the kill screen?
Yes. Lomont describes a nine-byte in-place code modification that lets the game pass board 256. That changes the program; it is not evidence that the unmodified original board can be completed through normal play. Whether a particular port or emulator can pass the board depends on its software and configuration.

How does the glitch relate to a perfect game?
A published analysis of the original code gives 3,333,360 points as the maximum perfect-game score. That figure is that analysis’s score account; it does not, by itself, establish a broader claim about current records or every version of the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which versions have the 256 glitch?
The documented glitch concerns the original arcade implementation. Later ports, emulations and cabinet releases may use different code, so the name “Pac-Man” alone does not establish that a specific version will show the same screen. Check the software version and whether it reproduces the original arcade code before expecting to encounter it.
