On the Xbox 360 S, the AUX port is a dedicated connection for the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor. It carries the sensor’s data and power; it is not a 3.5 mm audio jack or a general-purpose USB port. The original Xbox 360 connects Kinect differently, while Xbox 360 E models have a dedicated Kinect connection with a different rear-panel layout.
What the Xbox 360 AUX port does
Microsoft’s Kinect setup instructions direct Xbox 360 S owners to plug the sensor into the console’s AUX port. That connection carries Kinect data and supplies power, so the usual Xbox 360 S setup does not need the separate USB-and-power adapter used with the original Xbox 360. Microsoft’s Kinect Sensor manual shows the model-specific connections.
The port’s shape and dedicated purpose matter: use the Kinect sensor’s intended cable, not a standard USB cable. Although “AUX” often means auxiliary audio on other equipment, that familiar audio meaning does not apply here. Microsoft’s materials establish its Kinect use; they do not document it as a general-purpose accessory connection.
Which Xbox 360 models have a Kinect connection?
| Console | Dedicated Kinect connection? | How Kinect connects |
|---|---|---|
| Original Xbox 360 | No dedicated AUX/Kinect port | Use the Kinect USB/power adapter: its USB lead connects to the console and its AC adapter connects to a wall outlet, following Microsoft’s setup instructions. |
| Xbox 360 S | Yes; labeled AUX | Connect the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor directly to the AUX port. The console supplies power for the normal setup. |
| Xbox 360 E | Dedicated Kinect connection on compatible models; rear layout differs from the S | Check the exact console’s rear panel and the replacement cable’s compatibility before buying. Port details vary across the 360 family. See the Xbox 360 technical specifications and retail configuration reference for model context. |

How to connect Kinect to an Xbox 360 S
- Turn off the console before connecting the sensor.
- Set the Kinect sensor on a stable surface near the centerline of the television. Microsoft’s quick-start guidance recommends positioning it roughly 2 to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.8 meters) above the floor; this is placement guidance, not a universal technical requirement. See the Xbox 360 Kinect quick-start material.
- Plug the sensor’s attached cable into the Xbox 360 S AUX port. Do not force the plug if it does not fit.
- Turn on the console and allow it to detect and configure the sensor. Complete the setup or calibration prompts, then launch a Kinect feature or compatible game.
How the original Xbox 360 setup differs
The original Xbox 360 has no dedicated AUX/Kinect port. Microsoft’s instructions call for the Kinect USB/power adapter: connect the sensor to that adapter, plug its USB lead into the console’s rear USB port, and connect the adapter’s AC power supply to a wall outlet. Then start the console and complete Kinect setup. A regular USB cable plugged into an arbitrary port is not a substitute for the specified adapter.
What the AUX port is not for
Do not treat the port as a familiar “aux” input. It is not intended for:

- Headphones, phones, speakers, MP3 players or soundbars: it is not a 3.5 mm analog audio input or output.
- Generic USB devices or controller charging: its external connector is not a standard USB socket. Wired controllers use USB; wireless controllers use batteries or rechargeable battery accessories.
- Hard drives or networking: use the console’s supported hard-drive bay or USB storage options, and its Ethernet, Wi-Fi or compatible wireless adapter as applicable.
- Video input: the AUX port does not accept a picture signal. The console’s HDMI or A/V connections handle display output.
For Xbox 360 sound, use a supported audio route—such as HDMI, the analog audio connectors on an A/V cable, or optical S/PDIF on models and setups that support it. The available option depends on the console revision and cable.
Choose a replacement cable by console model
Identify the console before buying: the original Xbox 360 needs the Kinect USB/power adapter, while the Xbox 360 S uses its dedicated AUX connection. For an Xbox 360 E, inspect the rear-panel arrangement and verify that a listing explicitly matches the console and Xbox 360 Kinect hardware. Listings may use “AUX,” “Kinect port” or “Kinect USB port” imprecisely; the label alone does not prove compatibility. Do not assume an Xbox One Kinect connector or cable is interchangeable.

Troubleshoot a Kinect that is not detected
- Power down the Xbox 360 completely, then disconnect and reconnect the Kinect cable at the console.
- Confirm that the cable is in the dedicated Kinect/AUX connection on an S or compatible E, or in the original console’s USB/power adapter setup—not an unrelated USB port.
- Inspect the plug and port for visible damage, bent contacts or debris. Do not force a connector that does not fit.
- Restart the console and check whether the Kinect indicator light activates. A lit indicator alone does not confirm that detection and calibration have completed.
- For an original Xbox 360, verify that the adapter’s AC supply is plugged into a wall outlet.
- Check that the sensor is unobstructed and placed within the recommended play area. If the console still does not detect it, try a known-good compatible cable or sensor if available; the fault may be in the cable, sensor or console port rather than an audio setting.
Using an Xbox 360 Kinect with a PC
The Xbox 360 AUX port is not a PC connector. Connecting Kinect to a computer is a separate compatibility setup that generally requires the appropriate Kinect adapter and drivers; compatibility depends on the Kinect generation and operating system.
