In Unreal Engine 5.8, Sequencer controls a cutscene camera through several related systems: Cine Camera Actors set the shot, camera tracks animate them, the Camera Cuts Track decides which one viewers see, and gameplay camera logic takes over outside the sequence. Treating those as separate jobs makes it easier to build shots, find viewport problems, and hand control back to the player.

This guide follows Epic’s UE 5.8 documentation available as of August 18, 2026. Menu labels and behavior may differ in earlier UE5 releases.

Understand the camera-control layers

Camera control is more than moving an actor. A complete cutscene workflow has five layers:

  • Framing: camera position and rotation, filmback, focal length, focus, and crop.
  • Motion: transform keyframes, camera rigs, tracking, and shake.
  • Editing: shot timing, cuts, blends, and subsequences.
  • Runtime authority: whether Sequencer or the game’s camera system controls the view.
  • Output: what you see during viewport preview versus what Movie Render Queue produces.

The Level Sequence Asset holds cinematic data; a Level Sequence Actor in a level references and plays that asset; Sequencer is the editor used to work on its timeline. A camera track determines how a camera behaves. The Camera Cuts Track determines which camera is active. A camera can be animated correctly yet remain invisible if no active cut selects it. Epic also notes that opening an asset directly from the Content Browser without a level referencing it can leave contents unbound. See Epic’s Sequencer overview.

Create a sequence and camera

  1. Open or create the level where the cinematic belongs.
  2. Choose Cinematics > Add Level Sequence, name and save the Level Sequence Asset, then open it in Sequencer. Confirm there is a Level Sequence Actor in the level referencing the asset.
  3. In Sequencer, click Create Camera. Unreal creates a Cine Camera Actor, adds its track, creates a Camera Cuts Track if needed, and makes the camera the current cut.
  4. Check the viewport: it should be looking through the new camera. If not, inspect the cut and viewport state before adjusting the camera.

Other ways to add a camera include Window > Place Actors and dragging in a Cine Camera Actor, or Quickly Add to the Project > Cinematic > Cine Camera Actor. Creating from Sequencer commonly produces a spawnable camera, though the editor’s Create Spawnable Cameras preference can affect the default. Epic documents camera creation and Cine Camera settings at Cinematic Cameras.

Choose spawnable or possessable

Type What it means Best suited to Trade-off
Spawnable The camera is created for the sequence and can be destroyed with it. A dedicated cutscene camera that should not persist in the level. It may not exist outside playback, so runtime references need care.
Possessable Sequencer temporarily controls an actor already in the level. A persistent camera shared with gameplay or other sequences. It depends on an external level actor and can affect level state.

Neither type is universally better. Prefer a spawnable for self-contained shot setups; prefer a possessable when other systems need a stable actor or designers must position a persistent level object.

Pilot the camera and frame the shot

Piloting makes the editor viewport behave like the selected camera. Right-click the camera in the viewport and choose Pilot CineCameraActor, or select it and press Ctrl + Shift + P. Epic also documents Ctrl + Shift + C to toggle the exact camera view while piloting. Piloting is an editor workflow; it does not by itself determine which camera a runtime cutscene uses.

Do not confuse viewing through a camera with editing it. A viewport locked to the active Camera Cut follows that camera, but moving the viewport may not change the actor. To author a pose, select and enable the relevant camera track and pilot or otherwise select the camera for editing. Then move the playhead to the intended frame, adjust the viewport or Transform values, and key the desired properties. If you are only locked to a cut, you may change the view rather than the camera actor.

Cine Cameras add film-oriented controls, including filmback, lens, aperture, focus distance, crop, look-at tracking, and camera-specific post-processing. Start by composing with position and rotation, then adjust the lens and focus deliberately. A dolly-in moves the camera and changes its spatial relationship to the subject and background; a zoom changes focal length and field of view. Those operations can create different perspective effects, so do not substitute one for the other automatically.

Focus and tracking

Aperture affects depth-of-field behavior; check the result at the intended output resolution rather than relying only on the interactive viewport. When a subject or camera moves, animate focus distance as needed: a fixed value can leave the intended subject soft during a tracking shot.

Look-at tracking aims the Cine Camera Actor at a target and overrides its rotation. That is useful when a moving subject must remain the visual priority, but it can make keyed rotation appear to be ignored. If the rotation keys seem ineffective, temporarily disable Enable Look at Tracking and test them. If tracking is needed, remove conflicting rotation keys or limit tracking to the portion of the shot where it is intended. Verify the target binding in runtime.

Animate camera movement and properties

Expose the camera’s Transform track, place the playhead at a pose, and key Location and Rotation. Auto Key can create keys as animated properties or transforms change. Scrub before and after each adjustment to confirm that the intended values interpolate. Epic’s camera-cut tutorial demonstrates the Sequencer workflow; its sample coordinates and frame numbers are tutorial-specific, not production recommendations.

  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
  • Block the opening and closing compositions before polishing the movement.
  • Use a small number of purposeful keys; excessive micro-adjustments often create jitter.
  • Use the Curve Editor to refine easing, acceleration, deceleration, and overshoot instead of adding keys to solve every timing problem.
  • Keep camera movement motivated by the subject or edit, and separate movement from lens changes when that makes the shot easier to adjust.

For an art-directed shot that must hit exact marks or follow an irregular path, direct transform keys offer the most control. A Camera Rig Rail suits a defined dolly or tracking path; a Camera Rig Crane suits boom- or jib-like movement. A rail still needs authored framing, timing, easing, and focus—it does not make a shot cinematic automatically. See Epic’s camera actors documentation.

Build camera cuts and transitions

The Camera Cuts Track selects the active camera at each time in the sequence. Add it with Add Track (+) > Camera Cut Track or the Sequencer toolbar’s Camera button. If a camera is not yet bound, select the Camera Cuts Track, click Add Camera (+), then choose an existing binding or a camera under New Binding. Confirm the resulting section points to the intended camera.

  1. Move the playhead to the frame where the new shot should begin.
  2. Click Add Camera (+) on the Camera Cuts Track and choose the camera.
  3. Trim or move the Camera Cut section to set its duration. Sections generally meet edge-to-edge by default.
  4. Scrub across the edit and confirm the visible composition changes at the intended frame.

Adjacent sections without a transition make a hard cut. Use a blend when a continuous transition is motivated and the cameras’ framing and screen direction support it. A clean cut is often better when the edit changes location or time, when the compositions are deliberately discontinuous, or when blending would imply an implausible camera path. Preserve eyelines and screen direction, and make the choice for editorial reasons rather than treating the track as a technical afterthought. Camera Cut behavior and binding are described in Epic’s Camera Cut Track documentation.

Organize a cinematic into shots

Epic recommends partitioning a full cinematic into shots, with one camera and Camera Cut for each shot, rather than making one undifferentiated track from many unrelated cameras. Give cameras and shots descriptive names such as Shot_010_Closeup, Shot_020_Wide, and Shot_030_OverShoulder. For complex work, use a master sequence and subsequences for reusable or team-owned sections. Clear shot boundaries make retiming and revisions easier to manage; avoid duplicate camera names, especially when rendering multiple angles.

Use camera rigs and shake selectively

Choose a movement system for the job rather than stacking controls by default:

Method Use it when Watch for
Transform keys The path is irregular, tightly art-directed, or must hit exact marks. Too many keys can create jitter and make revisions difficult.
Camera Rig Rail The camera follows a defined dolly or tracking path. Path shape and framing still need to be coordinated.
Camera Rig Crane The shot needs controlled boom- or jib-like elevation and pivot. It is less suited to arbitrary 3D movement.
Look-at tracking A subject must remain the visual priority as it moves. It overrides manual rotation.
Camera shake An impact, explosion, handheld texture, or vehicle vibration needs added instability. It can compromise composition and complicate diagnosis.

Treat shake as a layer over intentional camera motion, not as a fix for poorly eased animation. Keep its amplitude and frequency subordinate to the shot, test it at final resolution, and avoid it during delicate focus pulls or precise compositions. A way to disable or reduce shake is useful for debugging and accessibility. Epic lists Camera Shakes among its cinematic workflows at Cinematics and Movie Making.

Hand camera control back to gameplay

An editor preview and a runtime handoff are different problems. Level Sequence Actor settings include Disable Movement Input, Disable Look At Input, Hide Player, Hide HUD, Disable Camera Cuts, Restore State, Play Rate, Auto Play, and Pause at End. Choose these according to the game’s design: should the player move or look during the scene, remain visible, or see the HUD?

  1. Identify or save the gameplay camera state before starting the sequence.
  2. Start the Level Sequence and disable movement or look input if the scene requires it.
  3. Let the Camera Cuts Track control the cinematic view.
  4. At completion, restore the required gameplay state and explicitly reassert the player camera or camera manager if the game’s camera system does not do so itself.
  5. Test skipping, interruption, death, pause, and level transitions as well as normal completion.

Do not assume stopping Sequencer always restores every camera state: the result depends on sequence settings and the game’s camera-management implementation. See the Level Sequence Actor settings in Epic’s Sequencer overview.

Render and validate the result

Viewport preview is useful for blocking and editing; Sequencer playback helps validate timing and cuts; Movie Render Queue (MRQ) is intended for final image-sequence or movie output. MRQ is a plugin. In UE 5.8, enable it through Edit > Plugins > Rendering > Movie Render Queue; a restart may be required. The workflow for rendering camera angles is covered in Epic’s multiple-camera rendering guide.

  • Confirm the active Camera Cuts Track and each shot’s start and end frames.
  • Verify frame rate and playback range.
  • Check focus, depth of field, motion blur, temporal effects, clipping, and geometry intersections at output resolution.
  • Confirm spawnable cameras are available during rendering.
  • Render a short frame range before committing to a long render.

Epic’s documented multiple-angle workflow uses multiple cameras in a sequence with MRQ; separate Takes create new Level Sequence assets and may diverge in content. Choose the organization that suits the output rather than assuming every angle belongs in one asset.

Troubleshoot camera and cut problems

The camera moves, but I see the wrong view

  • Check that the camera is bound to the Camera Cuts Track and that its section is active at the playhead.
  • Check whether another sequence or gameplay camera is overriding it.
  • Verify that Disable Camera Cuts is not enabled on the Level Sequence Actor.
  • Confirm the viewport is in the expected camera mode. The camera track animates a camera; the cuts track selects the view. See Epic’s Sequencer track list.

The camera will not move while I pilot it

  • Check whether you are locked to a Camera Cut rather than editing the camera track.
  • Confirm the camera track is enabled and the playhead is not on a section that overrides the pose.
  • Temporarily disable Look at Tracking to see whether it is overriding keyed rotation.

The cuts exist, but scrubbing does not appear to change the view

The viewport may remain locked to the active camera. Disable the viewport lock to inspect the scene and verify the active Camera Cut sections; Epic calls out this behavior in its Sequencer camera-cut tutorial.

The camera jumps at an edit

Inspect the outgoing and incoming camera transforms, the exact frame where a section ends, and whether the transition is a blend when you intended a hard cut. Also check whether the viewport is still piloted or locked, and confirm the new camera was framed rather than left at an inherited or unintended pose.

It works in Sequencer but not in Play or the render

  • Confirm the Level Sequence Actor actually plays the asset and has the expected settings.
  • Check spawnable versus possessable behavior, runtime bindings, and whether the camera exists in the runtime world.
  • Look for gameplay camera code or a camera manager overriding Sequencer.
  • Verify the sequence is associated with the correct level and that Camera Cuts are not disabled.
