For the story, choose armor with strong relevant defense that does not leave you badly vulnerable to the opponent’s element, then weigh its skills against your play style. In the postgame, treat armor as a matchup and build choice: compare elemental defenses, skills, and upgrade level for the fight you plan to take on.
How armor works in MHS2
Armor is a single outfit rather than separate body pieces, and its passive skills are part of its value. Capcom’s official manual says, “Armor can have a maximum of three skills.” That means two sets with similar defense can still suit different approaches. Use the equipment comparison view to see how a candidate’s stats compare with what you currently wear, then consider whether its skills help your plan.
Armor also has elemental defense values, and those vary between sets. A high general defense figure by itself does not tell you how well the set suits a particular opponent.
How to choose armor for a fight
- Check the opponent’s element. Compare the armor’s elemental defense values and avoid a pronounced weakness when a practical alternative is available. The Kiranico MHS2 armor database lists elemental defenses and upgrade levels by set.
- Compare displayed defense. Use the equipment comparison screen rather than assuming armor made from a newly encountered monster is automatically better than your current set.
- Read the skills. Choose passives that support your preferred approach; do not select by armor name or appearance alone.
- Compare forging with upgrading. At the Smithy, check whether a new set or an upgrade to armor you already use is the better fit before spending materials.
Best armor during the story
There is no permanent story-mode winner: available equipment changes as you progress, and the right choice depends on the enemy and the skills you value. At major story advances, visit the Smithy to see what has become forgeable and whether useful armor can be upgraded. Nintendo Life’s progression guide, published July 9, 2021, also recommends checking equipment after major quests or story advances and considering both defense and elemental factors (Nintendo Life’s armor guide).

If battles or story progress become difficult, Capcom’s manual advises adjusting equipment at the Smithy. It can be used to forge new equipment and upgrade existing equipment; a gear check is a sensible step before assuming you need a different strategy.

For endgame, pick armor for the target encounter and your build rather than relying on a universal ranking. The database organizes sets by skills, elemental defense, and upgrade level, showing why one set’s raw defense cannot settle every matchup. A specific recommendation would need a defined goal and encounter; without those, compare the candidate sets against the opponent and your intended skills.
