For the full bookshelf contribution, place 15 bookshelves around the enchanting table. Keep each shelf two blocks laterally from the table, leaving the intervening block clear; shelves can be at table height or one block higher. A square ring with one opening is a straightforward layout. The obstruction check differs between Java and Bedrock Edition, so check your edition if the table does not offer level 30.
How to build the setup
- Place the enchanting table. Leave room around it for shelves and a one-block gap between the table and each shelf.
- Add 15 bookshelves. Arrange them two blocks laterally from the table, at its height or one block above. A one-block-high square perimeter with one opening is an easy layout to build.
- Keep the intervening space clear. The block or blocks between the table and shelves can prevent them from contributing if they do not meet your edition’s obstruction rule.
Fifteen is the effective bookshelf cap: adding more shelves will not increase the bookshelf contribution. The specific placement mechanics described here come from community-maintained Minecraft wiki references, not official Mojang documentation; version-sensitive details may change.
Why the table may not show level 30
Check the shelf count, distance, height, and the space between the table and shelves. A shelf that is too close or too far, or an obstruction that fails your edition’s rule, may not count. Java and Bedrock evaluate that intervening space differently.
Bedrock Edition
For Bedrock, the two-high intervening space must be air. Check both blocks in the space between the table and a shelf.

Java Edition
For Java, the relevant intervening space at bookshelf height can be air or a replaceable block. Corner placements have their own intervening-space detail, so a simple square ring with one opening can make troubleshooting easier than relying on corner shelves.
These rules are based on community-maintained wiki references crawled several months before October 2026. If a layout behaves differently, confirm the mechanics for your edition and game version.

What the level-30 option does—and does not—mean
With 15 effective bookshelves, the level-30 option becomes available. That is the maximum bookshelf-enabled option, not a promise of a particular enchantment or the strongest possible result. Enchantment outcomes are random and can vary.
Do the bookshelves need to go in a particular order?
No specific building order is required by the placement guidance. What matters is that 15 shelves end up in valid positions: two blocks laterally from the table, at table height or one block higher, with the intervening space meeting your edition’s rule.

Do you need a Minecraft guidebook?
No. The setup can be built in the game without a printed guide. A Pearson sample of A Minecraft Mini-Encyclopedia includes enchanting-table material, but that only shows that printed references have covered the subject; it does not establish a current edition or retail availability.
