There is no single best Fighting Style for every Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3. For most armoured Paladins, Defense is the safest default because its +1 Armour Class applies passively whenever the character wears armour. The other three styles only pay off in specific setups: Dueling for one melee weapon with an empty off hand, Great Weapon Fighting for two-handed melee weapons, and Protection for a shield user who wants to guard a nearby ally.
When your Paladin picks a Fighting Style
Paladins choose their Fighting Style at class level 2. The four options available to Paladins in BG3 are Defense, Dueling, Great Weapon Fighting, and Protection. The Paladin class table also lists Aura of Protection at level 6, but that is a class feature rather than a Fighting Style, so it does not change the choice you make at level 2.
The four styles are not interchangeable. Each one depends on what you equip, and the right pick follows from your weapon setup and how you want to spend your combat resources.
The four styles compared
| Style | BG3 effect | Setup it needs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defense | +1 Armour Class while wearing armour | Armour worn | Broad defensive default, including two-handed builds that prefer AC over damage rerolls |
| Dueling | +2 damage with a melee weapon in one hand | One melee weapon in one hand and no weapon in the other hand | One-handed melee fighter with an empty off hand |
| Great Weapon Fighting | Reroll one damage die result of 1 or 2, once, on an attack with a two-handed melee weapon | Two-handed melee weapon | Two-handed melee fighter who values more reliable damage |
| Protection | Using your reaction, impose Disadvantage on an attack against an ally within 5 feet | Shield equipped; reaction available | Shield user who stays beside allies and can spend a reaction on them |
How to choose between them
Start with your weapon setup, because it eliminates most options before you compare anything else.

Armoured generalist: Defense
Defense is the most straightforward choice. Its +1 AC is passive, so it works on every enemy turn without a reaction and without depending on where your allies are standing. If you are unsure what your Paladin will be doing in a given fight, Defense is the style least likely to leave you short.
One-handed melee with an empty off hand: Dueling
Dueling is the right pick when your Paladin wields one melee weapon in one hand and leaves the other hand empty. BG3’s wording is stricter than many tabletop explanations of this style: the community BG3 wiki states that the other hand must have no weapon. A shield in the off hand should not be treated as meeting that condition, so a sword-and-shield Paladin should not plan around Dueling. Compare it against Defense: Dueling adds 2 damage per qualifying attack, while Defense adds 1 AC for as long as you wear armour.

Two-handed melee weapon: Great Weapon Fighting or Defense
Great Weapon Fighting rerolls a damage die that comes up 1 or 2, once. It does not add a flat bonus to every attack, so its value depends on the dice your weapon rolls. Its benefit is consistency rather than a higher damage ceiling. Defense remains a valid choice for a two-handed Paladin if you would rather have the extra AC than the reroll. You cannot take both, so decide whether you are protecting your own survivability or smoothing out your damage output.
Shield user guarding allies: Protection
Protection requires a shield. When an attack targets an ally within 5 feet of you, you can spend your reaction to impose Disadvantage on that attack. This is a situational tool, not a continuous aura, and it does not protect you or your allies from every attack. Its cost is the reaction, so it competes with any other reaction you want to use in the same round. Pick it when you regularly fight beside squishier party members and can afford to hold a reaction for them. If your Paladin spends most fights on their own, Defense usually gives more predictable value.

Accuracy notes and limits of this guide
The mechanics above come from community-maintained BG3 wiki entries for Fighting Style, Paladin, Dueling, and Protection. At the time of writing we did not locate a developer-published mechanics page that confirms each detail, so treat these values as medium-confidence. Game patches can change numbers and conditions, so check the wiki or in-game tooltip after an update before committing to a build.
For general tabletop explanations of these styles, D&D Beyond’s Paladin and Fighting Style pages are useful context, but they describe tabletop D&D rules. Where they differ from BG3’s stated conditions, follow the in-game wording.
Rank #4
The Fighting Style choice is an in-game build decision. Nothing outside the game is needed to make it, and no physical product is required to choose between these four options.
In every case the four styles are mutually exclusive for a given Paladin, so the choice matters: your Paladin’s weapon and shield setup should decide it, not a generic ranking.
