Golden carrots are the best choice for saturation per item; steak and cooked porkchops are better when you want more hunger points restored at once. The right food depends on whether you value a longer-lasting hidden reserve, a bigger immediate refill of the visible hunger bar, or ingredients you can readily obtain.
How hunger and saturation work
Hunger points are the visible food bar. Saturation is a hidden reserve that is used up before the visible hunger level starts to fall. That means food can help keep hunger from dropping for longer through its saturation, even if it restores fewer hunger points on the bar.
The values below are those reported by the linked sources, not fresh in-game tests. The available sources do not establish that every value is identical across all Minecraft editions and versions.
Food comparison: hunger points and saturation
| Food | Hunger points | Saturation | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden carrot | 6 | 14.4 | High saturation per item; useful when a longer-lasting reserve is the priority. |
| Steak | 8 | 12.8 | Restores more visible hunger per item; made by cooking beef. |
| Cooked porkchop | 8 | 12.8 | Matches steak in the cited values; made by cooking a porkchop. |
| Baked potato | 5 | 6 | Lower values than the three options above in the cited comparison. |
| Cooked chicken | 6 | 7.2 | Restores as many hunger points as a golden carrot, but has lower saturation in the cited comparison. |
The Minecraft Wiki lists 6 hunger points and 14.4 saturation for a golden carrot, while its steak and cooked porkchop entries give each 8 hunger points and 12.8 saturation. Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Golden Carrot describes the item as restoring three food markers and 14.4 saturation points.

Is a golden carrot better than steak?
It depends on what “better” means. A golden carrot has the higher saturation value in this comparison, while steak restores more hunger points at once. Choose the carrot if saturation per item is your priority; choose steak if you want a larger immediate visible-bar refill. Cooked porkchops have the same cited hunger and saturation values as steak.
Choose food based on what you can obtain
The practical choice also depends on your supplies. Steak and cooked porkchops require cooking beef or porkchops. Golden carrots are another option: the Minecraft Wiki discusses crafting them with gold nuggets as well as villager trades. What is convenient will vary with the resources and trading access in your world.

When hunger levels affect what you do
Food matters beyond comfort: hunger affects movement and healing. The Minecraft Wiki’s hunger guide reports that natural healing stops at 17 hunger points, sprinting is blocked at 6 or below, and starvation damage begins at 0; the damage depends on difficulty. These thresholds are useful context when deciding whether to eat, but they do not change the food values in the comparison.
