The right choice depends on what your build is meant to do, whether you play PvE or PvP, and which weapon and skills you use. Ubisoft’s Red Horizon season changed several gear-set and brand-set bonuses, so any advice written before that update should be checked against the live in-game tooltips before you spend materials on it.
Start with the job, not the rarity
The most useful way to judge a piece of gear is to ask what job it does for your build. A gold item is not automatically a better choice than a green gear-set piece. Ubisoft’s official glossary explains that gear-set bonuses come from equipping several pieces of the same set, so a single standalone set piece can be weaker than a high-end item on its own while still being part of a stronger overall setup. Judge each piece by the total bonus it contributes to the loadout.
A practical way to frame the decision is to name the role first:
- Weapon damage: brand and weapon-type bonuses, plus any talent that changes how a specific weapon fires or applies effects.
- Skill damage or skill efficiency: set bonuses and talents that reward skill use.
- Status effects: set thresholds and talents that add Burn or other effects.
- Healing, support, or defense: armor, repair, and survivability bonuses.
- A specific weapon interaction: a talent that only works with certain weapon types, such as Iron Will.
Once you know the role, compare candidate pieces on the same axes rather than on color or item score alone.

Check the update version before trusting any guide
Red Horizon is the key update context for current gear advice. Ubisoft’s season overview says the update continues to rebalance gear sets according to how difficult they are to use at full potential. The first gear-set pass focuses mainly on Red Core sets, with Ortiz: Exuro and True Patriot also included. Blue and Yellow Core gear sets are slated for future updates, so older comparisons that mix sets from different core groups may no longer line up.
Brand-set changes are also significant. According to the same overview, some brand bonuses are removed, including Shock Resistance, Health, Incoming Repairs, and Swap Speed, and Protection from Elites is added. Weapon bonuses have been reorganized so that each weapon type has at least one brand offering that bonus at one piece and another brand offering it at two pieces.
Ubisoft has also changed how new brand equipment arrives. Starting with Red Horizon, the company says it will stop adding new Brand Sets and will instead add more Named pieces with Perfect Talents or Attributes to existing brands. Any guide that discusses brand breakpoints should state the version it was written for.

Ember Engine: a status-effect and burn option
Ember Engine is the clearest example of a set built around one mechanic. It is a reasonable starting point for players who want to test a status-effect or Burn build, but it is not a universal winner.
| Pieces equipped | Bonus (Red Horizon overview) |
|---|---|
| 2 | 8% Skill Efficiency |
| 3 | 30% Status Effect |
| 4 | Spontaneous Combustion: each applied status effect has a 40% chance to also apply Burn |
Several talents change how far that mechanic goes:
- When the initially applied status effect is Burn, the enemy takes 25% more Burn Damage for the duration.
- The chest talent raises the Spontaneous Combustion chance from 40% to 60%.
- The backpack talent extends the Burn damage debuff duration by 50%.
These figures come from Ubisoft’s Red Horizon season overview and describe game stats, not independent measurements of damage output. Ubisoft has not published win-rate or damage comparisons for this set against other builds, so whether it outperforms your current setup depends on your weapons and skills.
Iron Will: a focused headshot tool
Iron Will is a specialist option. Its Exotic chest’s Resolved talent makes the next body shot count as a headshot. Ubisoft’s Red Horizon overview gives a two-second cooldown in PvE and a three-second cooldown in PvP. The talent requires a marksman rifle, rifle, or pistol, so it has no value for builds that use other weapon types.

Iron Will also changes how older advice applies. Ubisoft says the Determined chain behavior, where a converted headshot leads into another guaranteed headshot, has moved to Iron Will’s chest talent, with different weapon requirements and a cooldown. Builds that relied on Determined should be rechecked against the current talent text rather than carried over.
Fafnir: a shotgun status option
The Fafnir Exotic shotgun is another status-focused choice. Ubisoft describes its Dragon’s Breath shells as having a 40% chance to apply Burn, with weapon damage amplified by 50% of your Status Effect bonus. Ubisoft also notes that Burn application on enemies can be reduced by the game’s usual Status Effect diminishing returns, so stacking more status bonuses has limits.
Expertise: upgrade a build you have already chosen
Expertise is a progression investment, not evidence that one loadout is best. Ubisoft describes Expertise upgrades as increasing the base armor value of proficient gear. Proficiency can be developed by using an item, donating matching items, or donating materials, and Expertise levels are account-wide.
Because materials are limited, settle on a build direction before upgrading. Spending on a set you later abandon is the main cost of this system.
How to compare two options before you commit
- Write down the weapon type, skill set, and activity (PvE or PvP) the build will use.
- Check the current in-game tooltips for each set piece and talent, not an older guide.
- Count the set pieces you can realistically equip and note which threshold you reach, such as two, three, or four pieces.
- Compare the threshold bonus against what your current setup gives you, including brand bonuses and individual talents.
- If a value differs between PvE and PvP, use the value for the mode you play most.
- Upgrade with Expertise only after the build direction is settled.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Naming one set the best in the game. A claim like this needs a mode, activity, weapon role, and update version to mean anything. Ubisoft’s published season notes do not rank gear sets against each other.
- Using preliminary numbers. Public test-server (PTS) notes show earlier Iron Will cooldown and Ember Engine burn-chance values that differ from the final Red Horizon overview. Use the final overview for the current season, and treat PTS numbers as development history.
- Reusing old Determined advice. The chain behavior now belongs to Iron Will’s chest talent with its own requirements.
- Treating Expertise as a verdict. It raises base armor after proficiency, but it does not show that a build is optimal.
Evidence limits
The official Red Horizon material describes mechanics and values. It does not include controlled comparison tests or a ranked list of complete builds for every mode. The values above are the ones Ubisoft published for the Red Horizon season, and they should be verified in-game, since a later patch can change them.
