That sequence follows the original campaign through the two standalone campaigns, then moves into the expansion that continues the base game’s story. It is a recommendation, not a required route: quests connect the campaigns, so you can travel between regions without finishing each one first.
What is the best order for the Guild Wars 1 campaigns?
- Prophecies — Begin with the original campaign, set in Tyria and centered on the Charr threat and the Flameseeker Prophecy.
- Factions — Continue with the second campaign, a standalone story set in Cantha.
- Nightfall — Play the third standalone campaign, set in Elona and focused on the Sunspears and Varesh’s storyline.
- Eye of the North — Finish with the first expansion, which returns to Tyria and continues the base Guild Wars campaign’s story.
The order gives a newcomer a clear progression through the main campaigns before the story-continuing expansion. ArenaNet describes Eye of the North as continuing the base campaign’s story, which is why it fits naturally after Prophecies and the standalone campaigns.
Where does Eye of the North fit?
Eye of the North is an expansion, not a standalone campaign. ArenaNet says players must own Prophecies to unlock and play through it. To enter, a character must also reach level 10 and take the entry quest offered from Lion’s Arch, Kaineng Center, or Kamadan. The expansion’s story content thus has a specific Prophecies ownership requirement even though its entry quest is available from port cities associated with different campaigns.
Do you have to finish one campaign before starting another?
No. ArenaNet documents quests in major port cities that let an existing character travel to another campaign’s lands. Campaign access is connected by these quests; the suggested story order does not lock you into completing one campaign before visiting another.

That flexibility is useful if you already know which setting you want to explore. The available sources establish campaign settings and access links, but do not establish that one campaign is objectively easiest, shortest, or best for every player. They also do not support a single mandatory chronology beyond the specific Eye of the North requirements.

Guild Wars Beyond is optional follow-on story content, rather than another standalone campaign. ArenaNet identifies three storylines:
