There is no evidence-backed universal best race for a Demon Hunter. Night Elf and Blood Elf were the original choices, and Void Elf has reportedly become another option with the Midnight pre-expansion update. Unless current comparisons show a gameplay advantage for your specialization and activity, choose the eligible race whose look and character identity you prefer.
Which races can be Demon Hunters?
| Race | What is established |
|---|---|
| Night Elf | Blizzard named Night Elves as one of the original Demon Hunter race choices in its class preview. |
| Blood Elf | Blizzard named Blood Elves as the other original choice in the same class preview. |
| Void Elf | A 21 January 2026 announcement distributed through Publicnow reports that the Midnight pre-expansion update added Void Elf Demon Hunters through a short quest line. Check the current in-game requirements; the announcement is not enough to establish precise unlock steps. |
| Earthen | Blizzard’s 5 June 2024 race announcement marks Demon Hunter unavailable for Earthen. That announcement does not establish a broader current list of eligible races. |
Older guides may list only Night Elf and Blood Elf because those were the original options. Blizzard’s 25 October 2022 announcement expanded race choices for Mage, Priest, and Rogue; it is not a comprehensive current Demon Hunter eligibility list.
Does one race perform better?
The available evidence establishes race eligibility, not a current performance ranking. It does not compare racial ability values or show specialization-specific results for Havoc or Vengeance, nor does it establish a winner for raids, dungeons, PvP, or other content. So there is no sound basis here to say that one race is always best for damage or tanking.
A gameplay-led choice would require current racial ability descriptions and comparisons for your specialization and the content you play. Without those, a blanket ranking would be speculation. If performance is your priority, check current game rules and relevant comparisons before committing to a race.

How should you choose?
- Choose for character identity: Night Elf, Blood Elf, and reportedly Void Elf offer different character concepts and appearances. If you are not chasing a verified performance edge, preference is a sensible deciding factor.
- Confirm eligibility in game: Race availability and unlock requirements can change. In particular, the reported Void Elf addition came with a quest line, but the cited announcement does not provide verified step-by-step instructions.
- Do not assume Earthen is eligible: The available Blizzard race matrix marks Demon Hunter unavailable for Earthen.
- Recheck before a performance decision: Compare current racial abilities for your specialization and activity rather than relying on an old guide or an unconditional race ranking.
