User Rank in The Battle Cats rises when you upgrade Cat Units and Battle Items. That is the mechanic PONOS documents, and it is the only rank input its official material names. PONOS does not identify a single unit or item that gives the best return, so the most practical approach is to upgrade whatever your current stages need, then check the next rank reward in the game.
How User Rank is calculated
PONOS’s English User Rank page states the rule directly: “Upgrading Cat Units and Battle Items will raise your total User Rank.” The total is shown at the top of the Cat Base menu. Rank is therefore a running sum of upgrades across your roster and your Battle Items, not a score tied to one favorite unit.
The official text lists only these two categories. It does not describe other activities as rank sources, so do not assume that clearing stages or completing events adds to rank.
What rank unlocks
Rank milestones award items and raise unit level caps. PONOS’s English page uses a Rare Cat example: reaching rank 900 lifts the level cap for Rare Cats to level 25. The Japanese guide, published on PONOS’s Japanese User Rank page (ユーザーランク | にゃんこ大戦争), lists a longer set of milestone rewards.
#1 Best Overall
- OFFICIAL WARRIOR CATS MERCH: These cute (but fierce!) felines are officially licensed merch from Erin Hunter's hit Warriors book series.
- SERIES 1 COLLECTION: Bring home fan-favorite characters including Firestar, Graystripe, Brambleclaw, Brightheart, Scourge, Yellowfang, Tallstar, and Hawkfrost!
- THEIR WARRIOR SPIRIT SHINES: Each 6" plush has unique lore-based details and expressions, reflecting the Warrior Cats' epic journeys!
- UNBOX A SURPRISE COMPANION: Every plush comes in a blind bag. Who will you bring home?
- RECREATE YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS: Reenact awesome scenes from the Warriors books! Perfect for imaginative roleplay and storytelling!
Both pages are older than the current game. The English page is the older of the two, and the Japanese page may also lag the live release. Treat the reward lists as examples of what PONOS has offered, and confirm the reward attached to your next milestone in the game itself.
Where each upgrade fits
Each input uses a different resource, and the official sources do not describe all of them the same way. The table below separates what is stated from what is not.
Rank #2

| Upgrade | Resource or requirement | Effect on User Rank | Other notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard unit level | XP | Counts toward rank (PONOS English page) | XP is the currency for standard levels only |
| Plus levels | Gained when the same unit is obtained again through a Cat Capsule; XP cannot be used (PONOS Japanese guide) | Can contribute; the exact amount per plus level is not stated | Depends on duplicates, which are not guaranteed |
| Battle Item level | Cost not stated in the official pages reviewed | Counts toward rank (PONOS English page) | Upgrade cost and method should be checked in the Battle Item menu |
| Catseyes | Obtained as a possible reward from Gamatoto expeditions; not presented as a guaranteed drop (PONOS Japanese guide) | Not stated as a rank input | Raise the level cap for units that have already reached level 30 |
The key distinction is between standard levels, which you buy with XP, and plus levels, which depend on obtaining the same character again. Catseyes solve a different problem: they matter once a unit is capped at level 30.
A practical way to prioritize upgrades
The official material does not rank upgrades by efficiency, so the sequence below is practical reasoning, not a verified optimization.

- Start from the stages you are failing. Upgrade the units and Battle Items that improve those fights, because those upgrades help you progress and also count toward rank.
- Spend XP on standard level upgrades for the units you actually deploy in those stages.
- Upgrade Battle Items that support the same stages. The official pages say these raise rank, but they do not give a cost comparison against unit upgrades.
- When you draw a duplicate through a Cat Capsule, use it for plus-level growth. XP cannot replace it.
- If a unit has reached level 30 and needs a higher cap, Catseyes are the input that matters. Gamatoto expeditions are the source PONOS names, but results are not guaranteed.
Nothing in the official material says that premium currency, a paid pack, or any single unit is required to raise rank. Do not spend on those assumptions.
Checking your next rank target
Because menus and rewards change, use the live display rather than an older chart to find your next milestone.
Rank #4
- 12-inch Battle Cat plush inspired by Masters of the Universe
- Bold colors and detailed stripes reflect iconic character design
- Soft, durable materials for play, display, or collecting
- Captures Battle Cat's powerful look in a cuddly plush form
- Great gift for MOTU fans, collectors, and kids of all ages
- Open Cat Base.
- Read your total User Rank at the top of the menu.
- Find the rank reward display, which shows the next milestone and its reward.
- Compare that milestone with your current unit levels and Battle Item levels to decide which upgrade gets you there.
Apple’s App Store listing for The Battle Cats mentions rank rewards and a Recommended button in the Upgrade Menu in its recent update notes. If your menus differ from a guide’s screenshots, the game version is the reference point, not the guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the official sources do not settle
- Which single unit or item gives the most rank per XP. No such comparison is published.
- How much rank each plus level contributes. The amount is not stated.
- The Battle Item upgrade cost. The reviewed official pages do not give it.
- Whether Catseyes add to rank. Their stated role is the level cap, not rank.
For a player deciding where to spend XP, the stage-first approach above is the most defensible answer the official material supports.
