“Chorus” can mean a recurring section in a song or a group of performers in a drama. In a song, listen for the repeated hook or refrain. In ancient Greek theatre, the chorus sang and danced primarily in the orchestra, the open area in front of the stage.
What does “chorus” mean?
The word has two common meanings. In popular music, a chorus is a section of a song. In ancient Greek drama, it is a group of performers who sing, dance and respond to the action. The right answer to “where do we find it?” depends on which meaning you have in mind.
Where is the chorus in a song?
In a verse-chorus song, the chorus commonly carries the hook or memorable refrain. It returns as a recognizable section, often between verses, while verses typically introduce changing material. The arrangement can also include a pre-chorus, bridge or post-chorus, and not every song follows the same pattern. The University of Puget Sound explains the recurring hook in its overview of verse-chorus form.
Where did the chorus perform in ancient Greek theatre?
The chorus performed primarily in the orchestra, the open area in front of the stage, where its members sang and danced. The name is associated with dancing. Royal Holloway’s overview of ancient Greek theatre spaces and Thomas R. Martin’s account of Athenian religious and cultural life describe this connection.

What did the dramatic chorus do?
It was more than a group of backup singers: the chorus formed a collective presence within the drama. Its songs and reactions could offer a communal perspective, connect parts of the action, and shape a play’s themes or emotional effect. Its role varied by play; it was not always an all-knowing narrator. The University of Alaska Fairbanks discusses the chorus’s functions in Oedipus Rex in its dramaturgical overview.
What are a parode and a stasimon?
These terms describe parts of Greek tragedy’s choral performance. Aristotle’s Poetics, chapter 12, defines a parode as “the whole of the first utterance of the chorus.” In William Hamilton Fyfe’s 1939 translation, a stasimon is “a choral song without anapaests or trochaics.” The text is available through the Perseus Digital Library.

How can you tell which meaning is intended?
- A song: “Chorus” usually means the recurring hook section.
- A Greek play: “Chorus” means the collective performers, associated primarily with the orchestra.
If the word appears without context, either meaning may be intended; look at whether the discussion is about song structure or theatrical performers.
