There is no single best Hunter ranged weapon for every point in Classic WoW. While leveling, choose an available bow, gun, or crossbow with higher average DPS than your current weapon. At level 60, the answer depends on progression: Wowhead names Rhok’delar, Longbow of the Ancient Keepers as best in slot for Phase 1 and Phase 2, while its Phase 5 list names Ashjre’thul, Crossbow of Smiting as best. Your race, weapon skill, and access to the relevant content can also affect the choice.
Why a Hunter’s ranged weapon matters
Hunters rely heavily on their ranged weapon while leveling and at end game. Auto Shot, Aimed Shot, and Multi-Shot scale with weapon damage, so replacing a weak weapon can have a direct effect on damage. Wowhead recommends prioritizing high DPS and, when comparing ranged choices, slower weapon speed. See Wowhead’s Classic Hunter weapon guide for its end-game recommendations.
What weapon should you use while leveling?
Compare each new bow, gun, or crossbow with the ranged weapon you currently have equipped. The leveling guide’s practical rule is to favor higher average DPS; a common-quality weapon from a merchant can be a worthwhile upgrade if its damage is better. Bows are generally more plentiful during leveling, but the best choice is the stronger weapon you can actually obtain. See Wowhead’s Hunter leveling guide for representative options.
| Level or stage | Example ranged weapon | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Level 3 | Hornwood Recurve Bow | A representative early leveling option. |
| Around level 11 | Ashwood Bow or Hickory Shortbow | Examples of early upgrades. |
| Level 19 | Venomstrike | A Wailing Caverns reward. |
| Level 43 | Master Hunter’s Bow or Master Hunter’s Rifle | Options associated with Big Game Hunter; availability can vary by faction. |
| Level 51 | Verdant Keeper’s Aim | An example from a dungeon quest. |
These are examples, not a mandatory weapon-by-weapon route. The strongest option for your character depends on what content you have completed and which faction-specific rewards are available.

What is the best Hunter weapon at level 60?
Use the phase and content stage to narrow the answer. The Wowhead guide labels itself Patch 1.15.8 and was updated July 11, 2025; its rankings use that guide’s Classic rules and phase framing. If you are playing a seasonal or progression variant, check that its rules match before treating the list as definitive.
| Stage or phase | Guide recommendation | How to obtain it |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-raid | Blackcrow | Identified as the dungeon pre-raid best-in-slot ranged weapon. |
| Phase 1 and Phase 2 | Rhok’delar, Longbow of the Ancient Keepers | Earned through the Hunter class quest chain, which begins with Ancient Petrified Leaf from Majordomo in Molten Core. |
| Phase 5 | Ashjre’thul, Crossbow of Smiting | Drops from Chromaggus. |
Rhok’delar also appears in the Phase 5 guide’s ranged-weapon list, but that does not make it the Phase 5 top choice: the guide labels Ashjre’thul “Best” for that phase. The list is phase-specific, not a timeless ranking.

Does weapon type or race change the choice?
Bow, gun, and crossbow are all viable for the guide’s standard end-game Marksmanship/Survival 2/31/18 build. Weapon type alone does not decide which item is best; compare performance and availability, then account for your character’s weapon skill and racial specialization. Troll Bow Specialization and Dwarf Gun Specialization can tip a close comparison in favor of the relevant weapon type.

Remember ammunition and ranged bags
- Bows and crossbows use arrows; guns use bullets.
- Ranged attacks stop when you run out of projectiles, so keep an adequate supply on hand.
- Quivers and ammo pouches hold ammunition. Specialized bags can also increase ranged attack speed.
