The C-Virus is a fictional virus in Resident Evil 6 that damages red blood cells and causes infected humans to mutate into creatures called J’avo. Capcom says the “C” stands for “chrysalid”: some infected hosts continue changing until they form a chrysalis and emerge in a more complete mutation.
What the C-Virus does
Capcom describes the C-Virus as an RNA virus that deteriorates red blood cells and causes unusual mutations. It can also restore damaged tissue, but that restoration comes with further mutation. In the game’s terminology, an infected human may become a J’avo, a type of B.O.W. (bio-organic weapon). Capcom’s C-Virus entry explains these effects as fictional in-universe biology, not real-world virology.
J’avo are not simply portrayed as mindless zombies: Capcom says they can retain enough function to follow orders to a degree and operate complicated machinery, including weapons and vehicles. The entry also describes their unusual tendency to combust after death, attributing it to abnormally high body temperature and saying the trait is believed to have been inherited from T-Veronica.
How infection and mutation progress
Capcom describes mutation as a continuing process rather than a single fixed transformation. As the virus restores damaged tissue, it can drive additional changes. In a later stage, the host becomes enclosed in a chrysalid; after emerging, it has undergone a more complete mutation. The “chrysalid” name refers to this stage of the fictional infection.

Where the virus came from
In Capcom’s account, the C-Virus was developed in a laboratory beneath the Simmons family’s cathedral in Tall Oaks. It was based on the T-Veronica Virus, with strengthened and improved mutagenic effects. That makes T-Veronica its stated basis, not another name for the C-Virus.
What Anti-C has to do with Jake Muller
Jake Muller has viral-resistant characteristics inherited from his father, Albert Wesker, and Capcom says he was unaffected by C-Virus administration. Antibodies found in Jake were used to develop Anti-C; the U.S. government used his blood to manufacture the vaccine.

Capcom’s account distinguishes prevention from treatment after infection:
- Before exposure: Anti-C immunizes against the C-Virus.
- After infection: The infected person may survive if the vaccine is administered before J’avo mutation is complete.
- After advanced mutation: Capcom says Anti-C can immediately neutralize J’avo, chrysalides, and complete mutations.
Anti-C is not described as a guaranteed permanent solution. Capcom warns that the virus may eventually produce an Anti-C-resistant strain because of its mutagenic properties. The entry calls this highly likely but gives no numerical probability or timeline.
