For most players, bed mining in a tunnel around Y=15 is the practical default for ancient debris. It uses inexpensive materials, and it is the method Mojang’s practical guide recommends. However, no source establishes one method as the fastest on the current Minecraft release. The best choice depends on how much material you can spend, how much area you want to expose per blast, how much setup you can manage, and how much explosion and lava risk you will accept.
How the three main methods compare
Three approaches come up in official and community guidance: bed mining, TNT mining, and branch (strip) mining. The table below summarizes what the cited sources say about each one.
| Method | Materials | Area exposed | Setup | Lava exposure | Risk to you |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bed mining | Beds made from wool and planks; described as a lower-material alternative to TNT (Minecraft Wiki, “Tutorial:Mining”) | Larger blast than the other explosive option, but no measured area is given in the sources | Tunnel with short side branches, a bed at the end of a branch, and a shielding block | Explosions can expose lava | Personal blast: the bed explodes immediately when used, so you must be sheltered |
| TNT mining | Requires more materials than beds (no exact quantity stated) | Netherrack has low blast resistance, so explosions can expose a broad area; ancient debris survives the blast | Place TNT at intervals in a tunnel around Y=15 and detonate in sequence | Can expose lava | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Branch mining | No explosives needed | No explosion; you break netherrack block by block | Tunnel through netherrack and break it manually | Can still encounter lava | No explosion-related risk |
None of these sources provides a timed yield-per-hour comparison for the current release, so no row can be ranked on speed.
Bed mining, step by step
Bed mining is the method Mojang’s guide, “How To Find Ancient Debris” (published December 29, 2022), recommends. The steps below follow that approach and the Minecraft Wiki’s descriptions of it.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Dig a tunnel at your chosen Y-level (see the level section below), and cut short side branches off it.
- Craft beds as you need them from wool and planks, so you do not carry a large stack in your inventory.
- Place a bed at the end of a side branch.
- Before triggering anything, make sure you have full health, food, and diamond armor. Mojang’s guide specifically recommends these.
- Put a solid block between yourself and the bed.
- Use the bed. It explodes in the Nether, and the blast opens the surrounding netherrack.
- Collect any exposed ancient debris with a diamond or netherite pickaxe, and check for lava before moving in.
The alternatives: TNT and branch mining
TNT mining
TNT mining follows the same logic with a stronger explosive. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial describes placing TNT at intervals along a tunnel around Y=15 and detonating it in sequence. Because netherrack breaks easily under blast, one detonation can open a wide area, and the debris that survives the explosion can then be collected. The cost is material: TNT takes more resources than beds, and the sources do not quantify the difference.
Branch mining
Branch mining is the non-explosive option. You tunnel through netherrack and break it manually, so there is no blast and no need for a shelter block. The trade-off is effort: you break far more netherrack by hand than an explosive method requires, and you can still run into lava while tunneling.

Choosing a Y-level
Y=15 is the starting point the Minecraft Wiki’s tutorial gives, and it describes Y=15 as producing the highest concentration of exposed debris. Mojang’s guide also lists Y=11 and Y=12 as valid levels. Each level is a judgment call rather than a fixed rule:
- Y=15: the level with the strongest guidance behind it for exposure.
- Y=11 or Y=12: official alternatives from Mojang’s guide.
- Lower levels: the Wiki notes that mining lower may reduce the chance of breaking into a lava ocean, at the cost of some exposure opportunity.
Because the sources do not compare the levels’ yields in the current release, the choice is a safety-versus-exposure trade-off rather than a verified speed advantage.

Blast and lava safety
- Shelter behind a block before using a bed or TNT. Mojang’s guide specifically recommends this.
- Keep health and food topped up before you start, and wear diamond armor.
- Explosions can open lava. Be ready to block it off or retreat as soon as the blast clears.
- Bed explosions go off immediately when used, so there is no delay to step away.
Collecting ancient debris
Ancient debris is rare and buried inside netherrack. You need a diamond or netherite pickaxe to collect it. It is also fireproof, so it survives Nether fire and lava exposure in the sense that the block itself is not destroyed by them, per Mojang’s “Block of the Week: Ancient Debris” (published November 11, 2021).
If mining proves too slow or too risky, bastion-remnant chests are an alternative source of debris. Bastions, however, contain hostile piglins and hoglins, so this swaps mining time for combat and exploration risk.

How current these recommendations are
The official guidance dates from November 11, 2021 (the ancient-debris overview) and December 29, 2022 (the practical guide). The Minecraft Wiki pages used here were crawled roughly 1.3 years before the research date, so their details may not reflect every later update. No controlled test of these methods on the current release was found. Treat bed mining around Y=15 as a reliable general approach, not a verified fastest method. Also check the Y-coordinate and interface in your own edition, since the edition-specific steps were not validated against the current game.
Mojang’s and the Wiki’s guidance does not attribute any efficiency statistic or quotable claim to a named expert, so the recommendations above should be read as the sources’ practical advice rather than measured results.
