Set the resolution and frame rate to what your content needs, measure the equipment’s actual power use, and calculate electricity at your local tariff. There is no single defensible all-India monthly price: the total depends on your state and utility, equipment load, broadband plan, and backup needs.
Find the cheapest option for your kind of stream
Live camera, event, or gameplay
Reuse a suitable computer or other device as the encoder before buying a server or new machine. A physical live source must remain available at the premises; cloud playout for uploaded videos does not replace a camera or live gameplay feed. Choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain, then check YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and bitrates. For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p, 4 Mbps for 720p, and 2.5 Mbps for 480p. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of stability on a particular connection.
Prerecorded videos or a playlist
Compare the ongoing cost of leaving a local computer running with a cloud playout service’s actual quote. Cloud playout can avoid running a home encoder, but there is no verified basis here to say it is cheaper for every Indian channel. Compare the service charge with electricity, broadband, outage exposure, monitoring needs, and whether you need a local recording.
Calculate your local running cost
Measure the average power draw of the equipment that must stay on, rather than estimating from its power-supply label. Calculate energy use as:

Monthly kWh = average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000
Multiply that energy use by the applicable local marginal electricity tariff. Add fixed charges, slabs, taxes, and subsidies where relevant, and account separately for broadband, backup power, equipment replacement, and any hosting or service fee.

These examples are arithmetic, not claims about the power draw of a particular streaming setup. India does not have one retail electricity rate established by the cited national sources. A Ministry of Power release dated 23 March 2026 says electricity supply and distribution are the responsibility of state governments or distribution utilities. Check the current tariff for your state, utility, and consumer category; a national supply rule does not establish uninterrupted service at your premises.

BharatNet lists a service-specific bandwidth tariff of ₹120 per Mbps per year plus prevailing GST, effective 11 May 2026 through 31 December 2028 unless revised earlier. That is not a representative household broadband plan price. Check local ISP plans and availability instead.
Check YouTube eligibility and stream settings
- Confirm eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check this before paying for equipment or hosting: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- Connect an encoder: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions use a stream URL and stream key. Enter those in the encoder, then start and stop the feed as instructed. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Set output to match your connection: Use YouTube’s full bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose. Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce required upload capacity, but neither removes the need for stable power and internet.
- Test the complete path: YouTube recommends testing outbound bitrate, leaving about 20% headroom, and checking audio, video, encoder failover, and stream health. Its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption could break the stream: YouTube streaming tips.
Protect against power and internet failures
Power backup
List every device that must remain powered: encoder or playback machine, modem or ONT, router, and any essential production equipment. Size a UPS or inverter for their combined load and the runtime you need. A router-only backup will not keep the stream running if the encoder loses power. A UPS protects local equipment from some power interruptions; it cannot fix an ISP outage or a YouTube-side interruption. Test the full setup on backup power.

Internet backup
Test upload stability at the address where the stream will run. A second connection can help only if it is genuinely independent and available there. Keeping the router powered does not guarantee that the ISP path remains available.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all”; DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Do not assume one all-day broadcast will produce a complete replay. Use planned shorter sessions and make a local recording if preserving the full program matters: YouTube archive guidance.
