In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, the command is /effect @s speed 60 2. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference gives this exact example as Speed II for 60 seconds. Java Edition uses a different structure, with a give subcommand: /effect give @s minecraft:speed 60 1. The two editions are not interchangeable, so check which one you are playing before you type anything.
The Bedrock Edition command
The Bedrock form is /effect <player> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles]. In the official example, @s targets the player who runs the command, speed is the effect, 60 is the duration in seconds, and 2 is the amplifier. The optional hideParticles argument is a Boolean that defaults to false, so particles stay visible unless you set it to true. Microsoft Learn’s effect command reference (Bedrock stable) documents this syntax, and the effect examples page labels the sample as Speed II for 60 seconds.
To run it in Bedrock:
- Create or open a world with Cheats enabled. The reference marks
/effectas requiring cheats. - If you are in a multiplayer world or on a server, confirm that the host or server allows command use. Command permissions are controlled by the world or server, not by your own settings.
- Open the chat window and type
/effect @s speed 60 2, then press Enter. - Check the effects display to confirm the level and remaining time (see the level check below).
To hide the particles, add true at the end, for example /effect @s speed 60 2 true. This follows the documented argument order.
The Java Edition command
Java uses the pattern /effect give <targets> <effect> [seconds] [amplifier] [hideParticles]. A Speed II example is /effect give @s minecraft:speed 60 1. This syntax and its amplifier mapping come from the 1337Wiki /effect command syntax guide, a community reference rather than official Minecraft documentation. The guide does not establish which Java release introduced this syntax or confirm its version range, so if the command returns an error, compare your installed version with the guide and the official Minecraft release notes before assuming the syntax is wrong.

Why the level number needs checking
The two sources do not use the same number for Speed II. Microsoft’s Bedrock example pairs the amplifier 2 with Speed II. The 1337Wiki Java guide maps amplifier 1 to level II and 0 to level I. Do not assume a number carries over from one edition to the other. After running the command, open your effects display, which shows the active effect with its level and remaining time, and confirm that the level matches what you wanted. If it does not, adjust the amplifier and run the command again. Re-running the command replaces the existing speed effect with the new one.
Argument reference
| Argument | Bedrock (Microsoft Learn) | Java (1337Wiki guide) |
|---|---|---|
| Target | <player>, for example @s for yourself |
give <targets>, for example @s |
| Effect | speed is a valid effect |
minecraft:speed |
| Duration | Seconds. Defaults to 30 seconds when omitted. | Seconds, optional. Default not stated in the guide. |
| Amplifier | Used in the example 2 for Speed II. Default not stated. |
1 for Speed II; 0 for level I |
| Hide particles | Boolean, defaults to false | Optional fifth argument. Default not stated in the guide. |
Clearing the speed effect
In Bedrock, the reference gives the clear form as /effect <player> clear [effect]. The official example uses /effect @s clear to remove all effects from yourself. The sources do not give a Java clear example, so use the in-game usage help described below for Java.

When the command does not work
- Nothing happens or the command is refused in Bedrock: Cheats are probably off, or you are in a multiplayer session where the world or server does not allow commands.
- Error after pasting a command from another edition: Bedrock’s
/effect @sform and Java’s/effect give @sform are different. Use the form that matches your edition. - Java command fails on your version: The syntax guide does not confirm which Java releases support this form. Check your installed version against the guide and the official release notes.
- Syntax has changed or you are unsure of the arguments: Microsoft’s commands reference notes that
/helpfollowed by a command name, such as/help effect, shows that command’s usage in-game. This is the quickest check against your installed version. The Microsoft Learn Minecraft Commands page lists the Bedrock command reference.
Speed is a potion effect, so no items, command blocks or add-ons are needed to apply it. Typing the command in chat is enough.
If you are on a Java server or in a single-player world, the same effect can be applied through any command source that accepts Java’s give form. The guide does not cover those setups separately, so check the server’s rules first.
