In the 2014 rules, Variant Human is an optional version of Human that trades the standard Human’s bonus to all six ability scores for bonuses to two chosen scores, a skill proficiency, and a feat. In the revised 2024 rules, Human is a species with a chosen skill, an extra Origin feat, and Heroic Inspiration after a Long Rest; ability-score increases come from background instead.

What makes 2014 Variant Human different?
The 2014 standard Human gains +1 to every ability score. Variant Human replaces that ability-score increase with +1 to two different scores you choose, plus proficiency in one skill and one feat of your choice. It is therefore a different build option, not an additional package layered on top of standard Human.
Variant Human is an optional legacy choice. The 2014 rules say a DM might allow it if the campaign uses the optional feat rules, so confirm the table’s ruling before planning a character around it. D&D Beyond’s Human entry labels this material “Legacy” and ties it to the 2014 Basic Rules.
How the 2024 Human works
The revised 2024 rules make Human a species option with three notable benefits: a skill proficiency of your choice, an additional Origin feat of your choice, and Heroic Inspiration whenever you finish a Long Rest. Your background supplies ability-score increases, two skill proficiencies, a tool proficiency, and a specified Origin feat. Human’s feat is in addition to the background’s feat.

This makes the 2024 Human resemble Variant Human in offering a chosen skill and an extra feat, but the rules are not identical. The 2024 benefit is specifically an Origin feat, and its ability-score increases come from background rather than species. Do not assume that an Origin feat can be substituted for any feat from the 2014 rules.
Which rules should you use?
Start with the ruleset your campaign uses, not just the character builder’s label. D&D Beyond says the 2024 Player’s Handbook replaces most 2014 rules and options when a group uses it, while some 2014 options omitted from the new book remain usable. Variant Human’s own availability is conditional on the DM allowing it. Ask your DM whether the campaign is using the 2014 rules, the revised 2024 rules, or permitted legacy options before choosing.

Labels can vary between tables and products. D&D Beyond’s March 2026 editor’s note labels the updated rules “5.5e” and the 2014 material “5e,” and says both versions remain supported and compatible. For character creation, confirm the actual rules and options your group permits rather than relying on an edition nickname. D&D Beyond’s edition guide.
