Equip is a named ability that many Equipment cards have. Attach is the broader action of one permanent becoming connected to another, such as an Equipment to a creature or an Aura to the permanent it enchants. A successful equip activation attaches an Equipment, but plenty of attachment happens without any equip ability being activated.
Equip is one specific ability
Equipment is a card subtype, and most Equipment carries an activated ability called equip. Wizards of the Coast’s official Magic glossary defines the standard version: it can be activated only at any time its controller could cast a sorcery, it targets a creature that player controls, and the Equipment attaches when the ability resolves. In practice, that means a main phase with an empty stack.
A standard equip activation works in four steps:
- Check timing. You must be able to cast a sorcery at that moment. Equip cannot be activated during combat, on an opponent’s turn, or while something else is on the stack.
- Pay the equip cost printed on the Equipment.
- Choose a legal target: a creature you control. Opponents’ creatures are not legal targets for a standard equip ability.
- Let the ability resolve. The Equipment becomes attached to the target only at this point. Activating the ability alone does not move the Equipment. If the target is illegal when the ability tries to resolve, the ordinary targeting rules apply.
Attach is the broader relationship
Attach describes the action of joining one permanent to another and the resulting state, which is that the first permanent is attached to the second. Equip is only one way that can happen. Each effect or card decides what it may attach to, and when.
Auras use enchant, not equip
An Aura has the keyword enchant followed by the kind of permanent it can be attached to, such as “enchant creature” or “enchant land.” The permanent it is attached to is the enchanted permanent. Auras are attached as they enter the battlefield under their own rules, not through an equip ability.

Reconfigure attaches or unattaches
Reconfigure abilities can attach the permanent to another target creature you control, or unattach it, and they follow sorcery timing. The attachment part looks like equip, but Wizards’ rules updates state that reconfigure is not an equip ability for effects that specifically check for equip abilities. A card that cares about equip activations will not treat a reconfigure activation as one.
For Mirrodin! attaches without an equip activation
For Mirrodin! is the clearest example that attachment does not require equip. Its trigger creates a 2/2 red Rebel creature token and attaches the Equipment to that token. If the Rebel is destroyed, the Equipment remains on the battlefield, and you can later move it with its equip ability.

Equip planeswalker is a defined exception
Some cards have an “equip planeswalker” ability. It attaches the permanent to a planeswalker you control as though that planeswalker were a creature, and it uses sorcery timing. This is a specifically defined variant. Do not treat it as a sign that ordinary equip can target planeswalkers.
The mechanisms side by side
| Mechanism | What gets attached | Timing | Counts as an equip ability? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard equip | Equipment to a creature you control | Any time you could cast a sorcery | Yes; it is the equip ability (Wizards’ official glossary) |
| Reconfigure | The permanent to another target creature you control, or unattaches it | Sorcery timing (Wizards’ rules updates) | No, for effects that specifically check for equip abilities (Wizards’ rules updates) |
| Equip planeswalker | Equipment to a planeswalker you control, as though it were a creature | Sorcery timing | Not stated |
| Enchant (Aura) | The Aura to a permanent matching its enchant wording, such as a creature or land | Not stated | No; Auras use enchant, not equip |
| For Mirrodin! trigger | Equipment to the Rebel token its trigger creates | Not stated | Not stated |
Attachment has limits
“Attach” does not mean that any permanent can be attached to any other. The effect that does the attaching and the applicable rules determine what is legal. Two Wizards rules notes show how this plays out:

- Equipment on non-creatures (2019 rules change): a Wizards rules-change note from 2019 covers Equipment attached to objects other than creatures, and explains the rules consequence when that object stops being a creature.
- Illegal attachment on entry: a later Wizards rules update says that Equipment put onto the battlefield attached to an object it cannot legally attach to enters unattached. The exception is where the Aura rule changes that result.
Using the terms precisely
In casual conversation, players often say “equip a creature” to mean “attach this Equipment to that creature.” That is fine at the table as long as everyone understands it. In rules discussions, use “equip” only for the defined ability and “attach” for the broader action. This matters most when a card mentions equip, reconfigure, or attach by name, because the card’s wording controls which rules apply.
This article draws on Wizards of the Coast’s official glossary and its rules-change notes. Those sources cover the common cases well but do not replace the current Comprehensive Rules or the exact text of a card. For an unusual interaction, check the card’s wording and the current Comprehensive Rules before settling the question.
