The beacon is a strong answer if “hardest to craft” means the biggest Survival-mode progression hurdle. Its recipe is simple; the challenge is getting the nether star, which requires defeating the Wither. If you count the build needed to power it fully, the larger beacon project takes far more materials. Minecraft has no official ranking of its hardest crafts, so the answer depends on what kind of difficulty you mean.
Why the beacon is a strong contender
Minecraft’s official “Ten Rare Recipes” article gives the beacon recipe as 5 glass, 3 obsidian, and 1 nether star. That is not a complicated arrangement of ingredients, but the nether star changes the equation: the same article says you must defeat the Wither to obtain one.
That makes the beacon difficult because of Survival progression, not because its crafting grid is especially demanding. The beacon is also a light source; placed atop a pyramid made from iron, gold, emerald, or diamond blocks, it provides additional effects.
What “hardest to craft” can mean
There is no official universal ranking of Minecraft’s hardest craft. A useful comparison separates three kinds of difficulty:

- Ingredient acquisition: whether materials require boss fights, exploration, or rare loot.
- The full project: how much extra building and resource gathering is needed beyond making the item itself.
The beacon stands out most on ingredient acquisition. Its recipe is short, but the nether star makes it a boss-gated craft. The fully powered beacon project is a separate, larger undertaking.
Crafting a beacon is not the same as powering it
After crafting the beacon block, you need a mineral-block base to activate it. The Minecraft Wiki’s “Bring Home the Beacon” advancement guide describes a minimum 3×3 square of mineral blocks and an activated beacon for that goal.

Going for the fully powered beacon achievement is a bigger build. The Wiki’s “Beaconator” achievement guide describes a four-layer pyramid containing 164 mineral blocks. That figure applies to the full-power pyramid, not to the beacon’s crafting recipe.
What about the enchanted golden apple?
The enchanted golden apple is another item people may consider because of its rarity, but rarity alone does not establish that it is the hardest craft. Minecraft’s official Bedrock 1.21.30 notes say it had become more common in recent years through Ancient Cities and Trial Chambers, and that its rarity classification changed from Epic to Rare. Those notes apply specifically to Bedrock 1.21.30; they do not establish a cross-edition ranking of difficult crafts.

Verdict: the beacon, if you mean Survival progression
If “hardest thing to craft” means an item whose ingredients demand a major Survival milestone, the beacon is a defensible pick: its recipe requires a nether star, and obtaining one means defeating the Wither. If you mean the biggest overall undertaking, count the pyramid needed to power it fully—but keep that build separate from crafting the beacon itself.
