Friends and followers are two separate relationships on Roblox. A friend connection starts with a request that the other person can accept or decline, and it appears in your Friends section. Following is its own relationship, managed through a Following People list with its own Unfollow action. Following someone does not give you the same features or access as a friendship, and the two can be set, removed, and limited independently.
How a friendship is formed
A friend connection is created by a request. One player sends a friend request, and the other player can accept or decline it. Once accepted, the new friend appears in the Friends section of the account. Roblox Support states that an account can have up to 1,000 friends. That limit comes from the current Roblox Support help article on friends, reviewed in October 2026. The same article does not state a matching limit for followers.
How following works and how to unfollow
Following is tracked separately from friendship. Roblox Support describes a Following People list, and it treats unfollowing as a distinct action from unfriending. To unfollow someone, use one of these two routes:
- Open the user’s profile and select the three-dot menu, then choose the unfollow option.
- Open the Following People list and use the three-dot menu next to the user’s name.
Removing a friend follows separate instructions in the Roblox Support article on unfriending. Do not assume that unfollowing a user also removes a friendship, or that removing a friend also ends a follow. Check each relationship on its own.

What friends can do that followers are not documented to do
Roblox Support describes specific features for friends. These include:
- Private servers that are limited to friends.
- Communication settings that apply to friends.
The official material does not describe a comparable set of features for followers. It also does not give a full formal definition of everything a follower can do. If a feature is not named for followers in Roblox’s help pages, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming followers have it.

Joining another player’s experience
Following someone does not guarantee that you can join them. Roblox Support says a Join Experience option can appear when a user is currently playing and allows others to follow them. Even then, the joining player still needs permission to access that experience, and the other player must allow others to join. Treat this as a conditional feature, not a right that comes with being a follower.
Visibility is a separate control
Who can see your online status or current experience is governed by a privacy setting, not by your friend or follower status. Roblox’s audience options can include friends, trusted friends, followers, users you follow, no one, or everyone. The available choices depend on your age and region. Because of that variation, neither “friends” nor “followers” is a universal visibility setting. Check the Privacy & content restrictions settings in your account to see the options that apply to you.

Practical checklist
- Use a friend request when you want a mutual connection that appears in the Friends section.
- Use following when you want to track someone without a friendship, and remember that following does not guarantee the ability to join their games.
- Check your Privacy & content restrictions settings separately if you want to control who sees your online status or experience.
- Block a user only if you need to end all contact; a block removes both the friend and follower relationship.
