Metro 2033 Redux is a rebuilt edition of the same game, not a new story. It runs on the engine and gameplay framework from Metro: Last Light, and it adds updated visuals, physics and weather, carried-over gameplay improvements, and extra play styles, including Ranger Mode. What the official material does not do is list every scene, level or dialogue change from the original, so claims about those details should be treated with caution.
What Redux actually is
Metro 2033 Redux is a rebuild of Metro 2033 by developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver. The Steam product description says the game was “rebuilt in the vastly improved Last Light engine and gameplay framework,” and the publisher’s own copy describes it the same way. Redux follows the premise of the original, with Artyom’s mission through the Moscow Metro, so the story starting point is shared.

Do not think of Redux as only a resolution upgrade. The source material describes a rebuild of the game’s presentation and systems, which is a larger change than a simple port with higher resolution textures.
What the official sources say changed
Publisher and storefront descriptions list these changes:
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness one of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life with stunning next-gen visuals at 60FPS
- Rebuilt and Remastered for next gen - with all previous DLC content included, new modes and features, and many gameplay improvements
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival'
- The legendary Ranger Mode returns - dare you play the fearsome Ranger Mode?
- Visuals: updated lighting, physics and dynamic weather, promoted as next-generation visuals.
- AI: improvements carried over from Metro: Last Light.
- Controls, animation and weapon handling: also carried over from the Last Light framework.
These are marketed features. The sources establish that they were announced as part of Redux. They do not provide independent side-by-side testing, so the magnitude of each change is not something the sources can measure.
Play styles and Ranger Mode
Redux adds options that the official listings present as Redux features. The table below shows what the official copy states, and where it does not give a comparison to the original.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness one of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life with stunning next-gen visuals at 60FPS
- Brave the horrors of the Russian apocalypse - equip your gasmask and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry as you face the threat of deadly mutants, human foes, and the terrifying environment itself
- Rebuilt and Remastered for next gen - with all previous DLC content included, new modes and features, and many gameplay improvements, this is the definitive version of the critically acclaimed series that fans and newcomers alike will enjoy
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic adventure. With 10 hours of bonus content, that means 30+ hours of solo FPS gameplay just on one play-through
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn Survival Horror , or tackle it with the combat skills of a Spartan Ranger in these two unique modes
| Option | In Metro 2033 Redux | Comparison with original Metro 2033 |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Offered as a play style | Not stated in the official copy |
| Spartan | Offered as a play style | Not stated in the official copy |
| Ranger Mode | No HUD or UI, deadlier combat, limited resources | Not stated in the official copy |
If you are used to the original’s interface and resource pacing, Ranger Mode is the option most likely to feel different. Its stated design, with no HUD and limited resources, is the reason to pick it, so expect a harder game than the standard experience.
What the sources do not settle
The publisher and storefront material does not give a complete change log for Redux. That means the following are not established by the official material:
Rank #3
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness One of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life on Nintendo Switch
- Brave the horrors of the Russian Apocalypse - equip your gasmask and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry as you face the threat of deadly mutants, human foes, and the terrifying environment itself
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create One epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique play styles: 'spartan' And 'survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn survival horror, or tackle it with the combat skills of a spartan ranger in these two unique modes
- Whether individual scenes, dialogue lines, level layouts or enemy designs changed.
- Exact feature-by-feature differences between the original and Redux, beyond the listed improvements above.
- Any specific claim about story content differing between the two editions.
If those details matter to you, play both versions or check a detailed comparison from a reviewer who has directly tested each one. Official copy alone cannot answer them.
Platforms, release date and the performance claim
The Xbox Store listing gives August 29, 2014 as the Metro 2033 Redux release date and lists support for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Treat that as a listing detail for that storefront, not a complete platform list.
Rank #4
- Inklusive aller bisher erschienenen DLCs
A 4A Games studio representative said in 2014 that the team “completely rebuilt Metro 2033 in our latest engine, and managed to get both games to run at 1080p, 60fps on PS4.” That statement refers to the PS4 versions at launch, when both games were part of the Metro Redux collection. It is not a guarantee of performance on other platforms or on current hardware and system updates.
Metro Redux is a different product
Metro Redux is the double-game collection that contains Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. Deep Silver’s franchise page describes it that way. If you are looking for Metro 2033 Redux as a standalone game, the Steam product page lists it separately, and the collection is a separate purchase option.
Best Value
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content. Two unique Play Styles and Ranger Mode add hours more replayability!
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn Survival Horror , or tackle it with the combat skills of a Spartan Ranger in these two unique modes
Which version to choose
Choose Redux if you want the rebuilt presentation and the listed gameplay improvements, or if you want the Survival, Spartan or Ranger play styles. Choose the original if you specifically want to experience the earlier version as it was released, or if you are comparing content across editions. Because the official material does not document content differences in detail, a player who needs that level of comparison should look for independent testing.
Prices and availability change by region and storefront. Check your local store before buying, and confirm the edition you are getting, whether standalone Redux or the Metro Redux collection.
The Bottom Line
Metro 2033 Redux is a rebuild of the original on the Last Light engine and framework, with updated visuals, carried-over gameplay improvements and additional play styles. The official material does not provide a full list of story, level or content changes, so if those details are what you need to know, look for independent side-by-side testing before deciding.
