Synchro Summoning and Xyz Summoning both Special Summon a monster from your Extra Deck, but they differ in what you must sacrifice to do it, where the materials end up, and which number governs the new monster. A standard Synchro Summon requires a face-up Tuner and other eligible face-up monsters whose Levels add up exactly to the Synchro Monster’s Level, and those materials go to the Graveyard. A standard Xyz Summon stacks the face-up materials named by the Xyz Monster beneath it, and the new monster is measured by Rank rather than Level.
The core difference at a glance
The two procedures share the same starting point and the same goal, but they use materials in opposite ways. Synchro materials are spent. Xyz materials are kept, at least for a while.
| Aspect | Synchro Summon | Xyz Summon |
|---|---|---|
| Extra Deck monster | Synchro Monster | Xyz Monster |
| Required materials (standard procedure) | A face-up Tuner plus other eligible face-up monsters | The face-up materials the Xyz Monster specifies, commonly two or more monsters of the same Level |
| Number that must match | The Levels of the materials must total the target’s Level exactly | The materials must meet the Xyz Monster’s stated requirement; the monster has a Rank, not a Level |
| Tuner needed? | Yes, one face-up Tuner | Not in the standard procedure; only if a card’s text asks for one |
| Where materials go during the summon | Graveyard | Attached beneath the Xyz Monster |
| Later use of materials | Already spent; they cannot be recovered by the summon | Can be detached to pay costs or activate effects; a detached material goes to the Graveyard |
How a Synchro Summon works
A Synchro Summon is a Special Summon from the Extra Deck. The steps below follow the standard procedure described in the official English TCG rulebook.
- Confirm that you are in your Main Phase and that the Synchro Monster you want is in your Extra Deck.
- Check the face-up monsters you control. At least one must be a Tuner, which is a monster type printed on the card, not a role a monster plays by being used.
- Add up the Levels of the materials you intend to use. The total must equal the Synchro Monster’s Level exactly. For example, a Level 2 Tuner and a Level 3 non-Tuner monster together satisfy a Level 5 Synchro Monster.
- Send the materials to the Graveyard. This is part of performing the summon, not a later cost.
- Special Summon the Synchro Monster face-up into a monster zone the rules allow.
A Synchro Monster does not need a Tuner-free board. Any face-up monster on your side of the field can be used as material as long as its Level is part of the total and the card does not forbid it.

How an Xyz Summon works
An Xyz Summon is also a Special Summon from the Extra Deck, but the materials are handled differently.
- In your Main Phase, choose an Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck and read its material requirement. The common form is two or more face-up monsters of the same Level, but each Xyz Monster specifies its own line.
- Select face-up monsters that meet that requirement. Face-down monsters cannot be used.
- Attach the materials beneath the Xyz Monster you are summoning. Attached materials stay in place, rather than going to the Graveyard.
- Place the Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck on top of those materials, face-up.
Worked example: two face-up Level 4 monsters can be attached to a Rank 4 Xyz Monster. The two attached monsters remain there after the summon, and an effect that asks you to detach one of them sends it to the Graveyard.
Rank and Level are different numbers
Level is the number that controls Synchro Summoning. Rank is the number that controls Xyz Summoning. An Xyz Monster has a Rank and no Level, which has a practical consequence: a face-up Xyz Monster cannot satisfy the Level total for a standard Synchro Summon, because it has no Level to add. Keep Rank out of Synchro arithmetic entirely.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting an Xyz Monster’s Rank as a Level when calculating Synchro materials.
- Assuming a Synchro Summon needs an Xyz Monster or an Xyz Summon needs a Tuner. Neither is part of the standard procedure.
- Treating attached Xyz materials as gone. They remain available until an effect detaches them, which is why some Xyz effects use them as a resource.
- Forgetting that Synchro materials are spent during the summon, so they cannot be used again later.
- Using a face-down monster as material for either summon.
Card text overrides the standard procedure
The descriptions above cover the standard procedure. Individual cards can change the requirements, specifying different materials, a different number of materials, or a different way of performing the summon. When a card’s text and the standard procedure disagree, the card’s text controls the summon. For edge cases, check the current card text and the official rulings rather than relying on a general rule of thumb.

Rules context and sources
Konami’s official Problem-Solving Card Text article, dated July 27, 2011, classifies Synchro and Xyz Summons as built-in Special Summons. Such summons do not start a Chain, and they can be negated. That article is a rules explainer from 2011 and should be read alongside the current official card text and rulings, since later rules updates may have changed details. The English TCG rulebook used for the procedures above is labeled v9 in its title, but the copy available for this guide does not show a clear publication date, so confirm the current version on Konami’s official site before resolving a contested ruling. Konami’s beginner guide for the Starter Deck: Link Strike places both summon types in its advanced beginner learning path, which is a useful next step once the basics above are clear.
