The most dependable method is to train underwater. Dive, stay submerged until the oxygen meter is nearly empty, surface before CJ starts losing health, let the meter refill, and repeat. Guides agree on this loop, but none of them offers a verified rate that would let you promise a fixed number of minutes or metres for a set gain. The fastest approach is the one that keeps you cycling without drowning, and it helps to pick water that lets you get out quickly.
The training loop
Lung capacity determines how long CJ can stay underwater. The oxygen meter shows the time remaining before he must surface, and if it empties, he begins losing health. Training means using that meter on purpose, so each dive pushes the limit a little further. The GTA-SanAndreas.com San Fierro missions guide describes the same cycle for Amphibious Assault: swim underwater until the meter is nearly depleted, surface to refill, and repeat until the game shows messages that lung capacity has increased.

- Pick deep water close to a shoreline or exit point, so CJ can get out quickly if the meter runs low.
- Dive and stay submerged while watching the oxygen meter.
- Surface before the meter empties and health begins to drop.
- Let the meter refill completely on land or at the surface.
- Dive again and repeat until the game reports a lung-capacity increase, or until the mission you are preparing for feels manageable.
No source establishes that moving in a particular direction, holding a specific heading, or collecting a specific oyster is faster than simply spending more time underwater. The variable that matters is time spent submerged, so the efficient choice is the one that gives you the most safe underwater time per cycle.
How much lung capacity Amphibious Assault needs
The Amphibious Assault mission in San Fierro is the usual reason players train. The Pro Game Guides Definitive Edition lung-capacity guide states that the mission requires 20% lung capacity and that raising it further makes the underwater section easier. That threshold is reported by this guide for the Definitive Edition. It is not verified across every release, so treat 20% as a practical target rather than a universal requirement, and train beyond it if the underwater portion is giving you trouble.

Why published gain rates disagree
Guides give conflicting numbers for how fast the stat rises, and none of them is backed by official developer data or a controlled test. The claims you will see include:
- One guide, linked here from Games Learning Society, says lung capacity rises by 5% for every 200 metres travelled underwater.
- Another current stats guide says it rises by 5% for each 60 seconds submerged. This directly conflicts with the 200-metre figure.
- The Definitive Edition guide estimates roughly 10 to 15 minutes to max the stat. That is the guide’s own estimate, not a measured benchmark.
Because these figures cannot be reconciled from the available evidence, treat any single rate as unverified. The reliable part is the process: the stat rises as you spend time underwater, so the practical question is how much safe submerged time you can log per session.
Oysters: a useful side route, not a stat bonus
Oysters are worth collecting while you train, because reaching many of them requires underwater travel. Grand Theft Wiki’s oyster page ties the lung-capacity increase to the time spent underwater while reaching them. StrategyWiki’s stats page addresses a common misconception directly: collecting all 50 oysters does not grant a lung-capacity bonus. The stat rises naturally during the dives, and the collection reward is separate.
In practice, oysters are a sensible way to combine collectibles with training. They are not an independent shortcut that raises the stat faster than ordinary diving.

- On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.
Infinite oxygen as an alternative
An infinite-oxygen cheat removes the breath limit. It lets you stay underwater without the meter draining, but it does not work through the training loop described above, and the sources do not present it as a way to raise the stat. Use it when you only need to get past an underwater section, not when you want the persistent lung-capacity stat to improve.
| Factor | Training underwater | Infinite-oxygen cheat |
|---|---|---|
| Effect on lung capacity | Raises the stat through repeated dives, per the stats and mission guides | Removes the breath limit while active; not established as raising the stat |
| Edition or platform | Process described for the standard game; edition differences not stated | Codes differ by platform and edition; a PlayStation guide warns some cheats may not work in Definitive or Trilogy Edition |
| Inputs | None required | The StrategyWiki cheats list gives PC codes CVWKXAM and MANFROMATLANTIS for infinite oxygen; confirm which entry applies to your version before use |
| Side effects | Not stated | The GTA-SanAndreas.com PlayStation cheats page warns that saving after cheats can cause side effects, and describes an infinite-oxygen effect |
If you plan to use a cheat, keep a save from before you activate it, so you can return to a clean state if the side effects matter to your progress.
