Its closest real-world visual counterpart is generally identified as the SIG SG 552, but Activision has not confirmed that the rifle inspired the in-game weapon.
Which real rifle does the Grau 5.56 resemble?
Firearm-reference site IMFDB identifies the SIG SG 552 as the Grau 5.56’s closest visual match. That is a visual identification, not an official explanation from the game’s developers. Activision’s weapon articles describe the Grau and its fictional configuration but do not name the SG 552 as its inspiration.
The game’s attachments can also shift the rifle’s appearance toward other members of the SIG SG 550 family, including SG 550- and SG 551-style configurations. That resemblance does not establish that every Grau blueprint represents a real firearm variant.
What is the Grau 5.56 in the game?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, released October 25, 2019, was developed by Infinity Ward, according to Activision. Activision’s March 5, 2020 weapon article describes the Grau as an all-around assault rifle and discusses its in-game accuracy, damage, range, control, mobility, attachments and blueprints. Those are gameplay descriptions, not specifications for a real rifle.

Activision also published this in-game description: “This modular 5.56 weapon platform is lightweight and maneuverable, with exceptional range. Precision engineering and world class aftermarket barrels give this weapon extreme potential.” The description is flavor text for the game; it does not confirm the SG 552 identification.
How certain is the SIG SG 552 identification?
It is best treated as an informed visual comparison. IMFDB lists the Grau under the SIG SG 552, while the official Activision material reviewed does not confirm the connection. The Small Arms Survey places the SG 552 within the SIG 500-series family, but that family context does not prove which rifle the game’s artists used as a reference.

Model distinctions matter: the SIG Sauer AG catalog cited for technical data covers SG 553 variants, not the SG 552. Those specifications should not be transferred to the SG 552, and neither model’s specifications should be treated as the Grau’s real-world specifications.

Activision’s July 21, 2020 article gave this historical unlock challenge: “Get 5 kills in a minute when using an Assault Rifle 25 times.” That records the requirement described at the time; it does not establish the Grau’s current availability or unlock requirements.
