A playable Wii build of Free Radical Design’s cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III was reported online in December 2024. Coverage says the Free Radical Design Archive restored it from a Wii test kit reportedly found at an e-waste recycling center. “Playable” comes with caveats: reports describe graphical glitches and emulator controller adjustments, and the available reporting does not establish whether the files are currently available or authorized to download.

What is the leaked Wii build?

It is a development build of Free Radical Design’s Star Wars: Battlefront III, the LucasArts-era project cancelled in 2008—not one of the later Star Wars Battlefront games published by EA. According to coverage, the Free Radical Design Archive restored the Wii build after a Wii test kit was reportedly found at an e-waste recycling center. That is the reported provenance, rather than an independently verified account of the kit’s discovery.

The Archive described the build as coming from the “final week of development” and containing content fans had not seen before. It also acknowledged that bugs and other issues remained. The description is the Archive’s characterization, not a verified measure of the game’s completion.

Why was Battlefront III cancelled?

LucasArts cancelled the project in 2008, according to the available coverage. Free Radical Design co-founder Steve Ellis later described it as having reached final QA. GameSpew quoted Ellis: “It was pretty much done, it was in final QA. It had been in final QA for half of 2008 it was just being fixed for release.” That is Ellis’s recollection; it does not establish a technical completion percentage or prove the game was ready to ship.

#1 Best Overall
Star Wars Battlefront II - PlayStation 4
  • A new hero, a story untold in an emotionally gripping new Star Wars campaign that spans over 30 years
  • The ultimate battleground
  • Galactic scale space combat: Space combat has been designed for Star Wars Battlefront II from the ground up with distinct handling, weapons and customization options
  • Battery: No battery used

What does “fully playable” mean here?

GameSpew reported that the build could be played through an emulator, but noted minor graphical glitches and a need to adjust controls to reproduce the Wii motion controls. The report’s footage includes a story-mode excerpt and a transition from ground combat to space. Those are observations attributed to the report and footage, not a firsthand compatibility test.

  • Not bug-free: the Archive itself acknowledged remaining bugs and issues.
  • Not plug-and-play: reported emulator play required controller adjustments.
  • Compatibility is unspecified: the coverage does not name a required controller or establish compatibility with a particular emulator version.

How does it compare with the Xbox 360 prototype?

The Wii build is distinct from an Xbox 360 prototype that leaked in 2016. An eXputer forum reproduction of reporting says the Wii build was more than eight months further along in development. That comparison is secondary and should be treated as a reported timeline, not a verified measurement. The available accounts do not provide a like-for-like technical comparison between the builds.

Can you download it now?

The coverage discussed an online leak, but it does not establish current file availability or whether downloading the build is authorized. It also does not provide a verified safe-download source. The build was an unreleased, cancelled project, not a normal retail game listing.
