Fullscreen vs. Borderless Fullscreen: Does It Make a Difference for Gaming?

Borderless fullscreen is often as fast as fullscreen exclusive on modern Windows, with easier Alt-Tab and multi-monitor use. The best mode still depends on the game, presentation path, and frame pacing.

On a modern Windows PC, borderless fullscreen can perform about as well as fullscreen exclusive—but neither mode is always faster or smoother. The result depends on how the game presents frames, your Windows version and settings, graphics driver, display setup, and frame pacing. Borderless is usually more convenient for Alt-Tab, overlays, and multiple monitors; test both modes in the game you actually play if responsiveness or stutter matters.

What do fullscreen and borderless fullscreen mean?

Fullscreen exclusive

In the traditional fullscreen-exclusive (FSE) mode, a game takes control of the display. It may change the display’s resolution or refresh rate, and historically this mode was associated with a direct presentation path to the screen.

Borderless fullscreen

Borderless fullscreen is a window with no visible border that fills the display. The Windows desktop and other applications remain available through the system’s presentation mechanisms.

Why the menu label may not tell the whole story

The selected mode does not necessarily reveal how the game’s frames reach the display. With a suitable swap chain and window configuration, Windows’ DXGI flip-model presentation can use DirectFlip or Independent Flip to bypass ordinary desktop composition. Independent Flip can return to composition when other desktop content appears. Microsoft says flip-model windowed presentation can be effectively equivalent to or better than classic fullscreen exclusive. Microsoft’s DXGI flip-model guidance explains the conditions.

Fullscreen Optimizations can also make a game that believes it is running in fullscreen exclusive run behind the scenes in an optimized borderless format. Microsoft designed the feature to retain fullscreen-like performance while adding windowed-mode conveniences. Direct3D 12 adds another wrinkle: Microsoft documents that D3D12 does not support fullscreen exclusive in the old sense; a full-screen state change can instead change resolution and refresh rate to enable Fullscreen Optimizations. A game’s “Fullscreen” label, therefore, is not proof that it uses the historical exclusive path. See Microsoft’s explanation of Fullscreen Optimizations and its D3D12 swap-chain documentation.

Does either mode give better performance or lower input lag?

There is no universal winner. The old rule that borderless must be slower does not hold for every current Windows game: compatible flip-model presentation can avoid ordinary desktop composition, while other titles or configurations may behave differently. Microsoft reports that its telemetry found Fullscreen Optimizations performance “on average, as good or better than FSE.” That is Microsoft’s qualitative telemetry report, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular game; the cited article gives no percentage, sample size, or test date.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic

  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Presentation mode is only one part of responsiveness. Frame pacing, synchronization, game-side frame caps, and how many frames the CPU queues can affect input delay. Microsoft’s D3D12 guidance warns that allowing the CPU to queue frames without limiting frames in flight can increase latency. So a game may feel less responsive in one mode because of its overall pacing or queue behavior, not simply because its menu says “Borderless.”

For Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says it moves compatible games from the legacy blt model to flip model, reducing frame latency and enabling Auto HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) on supported displays. Compatibility and display support matter; the setting does not make every game or monitor support every feature. Microsoft also says this optimization is enabled automatically when Auto HDR is on.

Which mode is more convenient?

Borderless fullscreen generally makes switching to other applications and using multiple monitors easier. Microsoft identifies faster Alt-Tab, multi-monitor support, and overlays as benefits associated with Fullscreen Optimizations; its flip-model guidance also notes faster Alt-Tab and modern display-feature integration for borderless flip-model applications.

Fullscreen exclusive can still be worth trying if a specific game or setup behaves better with it. Conversely, an individual title can have a regression or input-lag issue with an optimized or borderless path. Microsoft documents a per-game option to disable Fullscreen Optimizations for troubleshooting; that is a way to test a problem, not a recommendation to turn the feature off everywhere.

How to compare the modes fairly

  1. Choose a repeatable test. Use the same game, scene, and duration for each run. Avoid comparing different gameplay situations.
  2. Keep other settings fixed. Match resolution, refresh rate, graphics settings, frame cap, and synchronization settings. Change only the display mode.
  3. Check more than average FPS. Pay attention to frame pacing, stutter, tearing, and how responsive controls feel, as well as the displayed frame rate. There is no universal consumer test protocol in the cited documentation, so consistency between your own runs matters.
  4. Try the other mode if you find a repeatable problem. If one setting feels less responsive or produces stutter or an unusual frame-rate result, switch modes and repeat the same test rather than relying on general rules.
  5. Check the Windows 11 per-game setting if applicable. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game’s windowed-game optimization setting if available, change it, and restart the game before comparing again. The option is for compatible DirectX 10/11 games running windowed or borderless.
  6. Treat Fullscreen Optimizations as a game-specific troubleshooting variable. If you suspect it is causing a problem, use Microsoft’s documented per-game compatibility setting to disable it and retest. Keep the change only if your comparison supports it.

What should you choose?

Your priority or situation What to try
Quick Alt-Tab, overlays, or using multiple monitors Start with borderless fullscreen; it generally offers the more convenient workflow.
Responsiveness, stutter, or an unexplained performance difference Compare borderless and fullscreen in the same game and configuration, checking frame pacing as well as average FPS.
A compatible DirectX 10/11 game on Windows 11 Check whether Optimizations for windowed games is available for the title, then restart the game after changing it.
A title with a repeatable issue under Fullscreen Optimizations Test the per-game option to disable Fullscreen Optimizations rather than applying a system-wide assumption.
