Minecraft has not confirmed a specific story behind Music Disc 5. Official sources connect the disc to Disc Fragment 5 and the Ancient City, while the Deep Dark’s sound-based mechanics explain why the recording feels ominous. Claims that it depicts an ancient person, a portal, or a Warden attack are fan interpretations, not established lore in the official sources discussed here.
What Minecraft officially confirms about Disc 5
Mojang announced Music Disc 5 and Disc Fragment 5 in Java Edition snapshots 22w16a/22w16b. Minecraft’s Deep Dark feature says fragments found in Ancient Cities can be crafted into a unique music disc. That establishes an in-game connection between the disc, its fragments, and the Ancient City—but not a plot explaining who made the recording or what happens in it.
The setting helps explain the disc’s mood. Ancient Cities generate in the Deep Dark, where sculk sensors detect vibrations caused by actions such as moving, placing or breaking blocks, and items falling. A nearby sculk shrieker can respond by summoning a Warden, which is blind and navigates using sound and smell. These are confirmed gameplay details, not proof that the sounds on Disc 5 record those events.
Why players hear a story in the recording
The disc’s unsettling sounds, combined with its Ancient City association and the Deep Dark’s sound-focused hazards, invite listeners to imagine a history behind it. Minecraft concept artist Mariana Salimena described “mystery, curiosity, and history” as key words behind the Deep Dark’s visual design. She also said the Ancient Cities’ look was loosely inspired by Central and South American ancient cities and temple aesthetics, with forms that play with sound and hearing. Those comments describe visual design and biome themes; they do not explain Disc 5’s narrative.

Common Disc 5 theories—and what is actually established
- An ancient inhabitant is being pursued: The Ancient City setting and ominous audio make this a plausible fan reading, but the cited official sources do not identify a person or confirm a chase.
- The recording depicts a Warden attack: Wardens are part of Deep Dark gameplay, and their sound-based behavior fits the setting. No cited official source says the disc records a Warden attacking anyone.
- The sounds reveal a portal or another hidden event: This is speculation unless supported by an official source that identifies such an event. The item’s name and location alone do not establish it.
These interpretations may be interesting ways to listen to the track, but they should be labeled theories rather than canon. The official material confirms the disc’s item and setting connections; it does not name characters, describe a sequence of events, or explain what the recording represents.

Minecraft’s general music-disc history says discs were added in Alpha 1.0.14 in July 2010. Its account discusses discs created by C418, with Pigstep by Lena Raine as an exception. That general background does not assign Music Disc 5 to either composer, so it should not be used to infer who made this track.
