The maximum Gym Defender Bonus is 50 PokéCoins per day. Niantic’s limit applies no matter how long a Pokémon stays in a Gym or how many Pokémon return that day. Coins are awarded only when a defender returns to you.
How the Gym Defender Bonus works
Leaving a Pokémon at a Gym lets it earn the Defender Bonus while it defends against challengers from other teams. Niantic says longer defense earns more coins, but the total is subject to the daily 50-PokéCoin limit. The Help Center does not specify an exact coin-per-minute rate or the time needed to reach the cap.

You receive the coins after the Pokémon returns, along with an in-game notification stating the amount earned. A Pokémon returns after being defeated in a Gym battle once its CP reaches zero. Its motivation decreases over time and through losses; when motivation reaches zero, it returns to its Trainer the next time it loses a battle. What happens if multiple Pokémon return?
All Pokémon that return on the same day share one 50-PokéCoin daily limit. For example, if one return earns part of the daily bonus, another return that day can add coins only up to the remaining amount—not another 50. Does a multi-day Gym stay earn more than 50 coins?
No. A Pokémon that defends for several days does not bank a larger payout for the day it returns. The daily limit still applies, so the most you can receive that day is 50 PokéCoins—even after a long stay.
Where can you check your daily progress?
Niantic points players to Today View to see their progress toward the daily limit. The cap is official guidance, but Niantic says it may change; check the Help Center for the current rule if you are reading this later. Niantic: Earning the Defender Bonus
