ModRetro says its shell alloy and protective coating are also used in Anduril products, including attack drones and the Ghost autonomous air vehicle. Those are company claims reported by Notebookcheck, not independently verified material or durability findings.
What is the Chromatic Anduril Edition?
Announced by ModRetro in December 2025, the Anduril Edition is a branded version of the Chromatic, a handheld designed to play original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Notebookcheck reported the announcement on December 20, 2025. The edition carries Anduril branding and, according to the report, includes an Anduril logo charm.
ModRetro owner Palmer Luckey is also Anduril’s CEO, a connection that helps explain the collaboration and its branding. The announcement centers on the materials the company says it used, rather than on a reported change to the Chromatic’s gaming function.
Does it use the same metal as Anduril drones?
ModRetro says the Chromatic Anduril Edition’s shell is made from the same magnesium-aluminum alloy used in Anduril attack drones. Notebookcheck relayed that description; the report does not independently verify the alloy’s composition or establish that the handheld and drones use identical material specifications.

The report does not provide independent testing of the coating or evidence about how it performs on the handheld.
What do the material claims mean for buyers?
The announcement does not establish that the Anduril Edition is more durable, weatherproof, or better suited to harsh conditions than another Chromatic. ModRetro described the device as being “for those in need of performance and reliability under any and all conditions.” That is the company’s marketing language, not a reported test result.
