The iconic Mario mushroom that makes him grow is the Super Mushroom. The green 1-Up Mushroom is a different item: it gives Mario an extra life.
Super Mushroom or 1-Up Mushroom?
Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. instruction manual distinguishes the two by what they do:

| Item | Effect in the original game |
|---|---|
| Super Mushroom | Transforms Mario into Super Mario. |
| 1-Up Mushroom | Gives Mario one extra life. |
So if you mean the mushroom that makes Mario bigger, its name is the Super Mushroom. If you mean the green mushroom associated with gaining a life, that is the 1-Up Mushroom. Nintendo dates the original Japanese release of Super Mario Bros. to September 13, 1985.
