Its campaigns tell several different stories, especially the Black Ops and Modern Warfare series. The overview below focuses on those two strands and keeps major twists out of the way.
How the Call of Duty story is organized
Think of Call of Duty as a franchise with multiple campaign continuities, not one long narrative that every game advances. The Black Ops games center on espionage, conspiracies, and recurring characters across different periods. The 2019 Modern Warfare and its sequels follow Task Force 141 in a connected reboot-era storyline.
Those are useful entry points, not a complete canon map: the available official summaries do not settle how every game, spin-off, seasonal story, or Zombies campaign fits together.
What is the plot of Black Ops?
Black Ops follows a spy-and-conspiracy thread that spans multiple eras. Activision’s recap describes the first game opening in 1961, with Frank Woods, Alex Mason, and Joseph Bowman taking part in Operation 40 during the Bay of Pigs invasion. The central danger becomes the Numbers Program, a broadcast meant to activate sleeper agents; Mason’s final mission is to stop it and eliminate Soviet general Nikita Dragovich. Activision’s Black Ops story recap covers this background.

Black Ops Cold War
Set in the early 1980s, Black Ops Cold War follows Mason, Woods, Jason Hudson, Russell Adler, and a new playable operative called Bell as they investigate Perseus, a Soviet spy seeking to undermine Western power. It carries the espionage focus into a different period rather than simply repeating the first game’s conflict. The same official recap summarizes the setup.
Black Ops II
Black Ops II links two time periods and makes Raul Menendez the central antagonist. His campaign against the United States involves hijacking its military infrastructure, and choices in Strike Force missions can affect the campaign’s outcome. Activision’s game overview describes the premise.

What is the plot of the reboot-era Modern Warfare?
The 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is an “epic reimagining” of the series, not a recap of the original trilogy. Its campaign depicts covert operations involving international special forces and freedom fighters in Europe and the Middle East. Activision’s overview of the 2019 game describes its setup.
Modern Warfare II
Modern Warfare II continues that story, taking place three years after Task Force 141’s formation. After a U.S. airstrike kills a foreign general, his successor works with a drug cartel to move stolen U.S. ballistic missiles. Task Force 141 tries to stop the resulting threat to U.S. targets. Blizzard’s launch overview summarizes the campaign premise.

The official descriptions used here treat them as distinct campaign strands, with different central characters and conflicts. They do not establish a complete continuity map connecting every Black Ops and Modern Warfare release, so it is safest to follow each subseries on its own rather than assume one unified chronology.

Which Call of Duty story should you follow?
| Storyline | Focus | What connects the campaigns |
|---|---|---|
| Black Ops | Espionage and conspiracies across different historical periods | Recurring figures such as Mason and Woods, alongside threats including the Numbers Program, Perseus, and Menendez |
