The point of no return for the whole game is the warning before the Battle of Hoover Dam. Fallout: New Vegas has a definite ending, and you cannot continue that playthrough after completing the main quest. Make a separate manual save before proceeding so you can return to the Mojave afterward.
What happens when you reach the point of no return?
Completing the main quest takes you through the Battle of Hoover Dam and to the ending credits. Bethesda Support confirms that “Fallout: New Vegas has a definite ending.” After the credits, the game offers a new game rather than letting you resume your existing character’s open-world save.

To keep exploring with that character, load a save made before the warning that precedes the battle. The warning is the practical point to stop, save separately, and decide whether you are ready to finish the story.
How to protect your playthrough
- When the game warns that proceeding will take you toward the Battle of Hoover Dam, pause before accepting.
- Create a separate manual save. Keep it distinct from your regular rotating saves so you can return to the Mojave after seeing the ending.
- Proceed when you are ready to complete the main quest. If you want to continue exploring later, load that pre-warning save.
Is the final battle the same as a faction lockout?
No. The Hoover Dam warning is the last point of no return for the entire playthrough: the main quest ends and the game does not resume afterward. Faction lockouts can happen earlier, but they affect access to particular faction quests rather than ending the game.

|---|---|---|---|
| Battle of Hoover Dam | The whole playthrough | After the warning before the final battle | Completing the main quest ends the game. Continue exploring by loading a save from before the warning. |
| Faction quest lockout | A faction questline | Earlier in the story; timing depends on quests completed and actions taken | Some faction quests can become unavailable. The exact cutoff is not the same for every save. |
Faction paths should not be treated as having one universal cutoff. Your progress and choices matter; the Fallout Wiki’s overview identifies Yes Man’s Wild Card path as an exception to the general pattern. If a particular faction quest matters to you, check your current quest state before advancing another faction’s storyline.

On the NCR route, Eureka! is the end quest at Hoover Dam. The Fallout Wiki’s quest entry says it follows the preceding NCR story steps and gives you an opportunity to wait before proceeding. Once you move forward into the final battle and complete the main quest, the game ends. Use that pause to make your separate manual save if you want the option to return to your ongoing playthrough.
