Its purpose is to give players a place to track parts of their driving, share screenshots and custom trucks, and join community deliveries and goals. It does not replace either game, and it is not a separate trucking simulator you can play on its own.
What World of Trucks is for
SCS’s official project page describes World of Trucks as an online platform that complements its two trucking games, Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. The useful way to think about it is as an online layer sitting beside the single-player games. The driving, the economy and the trucks all live in ETS2 or ATS. World of Trucks adds the social and record-keeping side: sharing what you have done, comparing progress with others, and taking part in goals that many players work toward together.
What you can do with it
The SCS community page lists the platform’s main features. Based on that page, these are the areas players actually use:
- External contracts: deliveries you can carry out through the service, linked to the games.
- Stats and achievements: a record of your progress and the milestones you have reached.
- Screenshots: sharing images from your drives and customized trucks.
- Connections: links with other drivers in the community.
- Events: organized activities tied to the games (see below).
- News: updates about ETS2 and ATS.
If you only play offline and never want to share anything, these features will not add anything to your experience. The reason to use the service is the social and tracking side, not gameplay that cannot be reached otherwise.

Community events
Events are the most distinctive part of the platform. SCS says they are integrated with both games: players deliver specific cargoes in the game, and those deliveries count toward a shared community objective. That gives a group of players a common target, such as a combined mileage goal, without requiring anyone to play together in the same session.
The official homepage has featured the Cruising South Dakota event and a community mileage goal. Event listings change over time, so the event you see may differ from the one described here. Check the official site for each event’s current requirements, end date and rewards before planning around it.

Which game you need
World of Trucks connects to both games, but each one covers a different region of the map. Choose the companion that matches the game you actually play.

The official sources do not describe a feature comparison between the two games, so the table only shows which region each one covers and which companion it belongs to. Both games are separate products that you must own to use the game features the platform builds on.

Origins and how the system was described
World of Trucks was released on 16 October 2013, according to the release date SCS lists on its project page. SCS later described the service in a 2015 Q&A as an optional layer alongside the single-player game. That description still explains the design intent, but it is historical. Limits and behaviour from the early period may have changed.
The same Q&A explained that the external contract system runs on real time rather than the games’ compressed in-game time. That is a description of how the system was designed, not a current rulebook. For present contract rules, follow the instructions shown inside the game and on the official site.

What the service is not
World of Trucks is not a standalone truck simulator, and it does not add a separate driving mode you can open without ETS2 or ATS. The official material presents it as an online companion, so treat it as an addition to a game you already play rather than a product in its own right.
The official sources also do not publish user counts or event participation totals, so there is no reliable public figure to measure how many players use the platform or how many take part in each event.

Quick decision guide
- You want to share screenshots, track stats and join community goals: World of Trucks fits your needs, alongside ETS2 or ATS.
- You only want to drive alone and never share anything: you can skip the service entirely.
- You are looking for a standalone trucking game: World of Trucks is not one. Look at ETS2 or ATS instead.
