In Minecraft, “Purple Guy” almost always refers to William Afton, the villain of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. Players see him as a skin, a costume, or a character in FNAF-themed roleplay. He is not a built-in Minecraft mob or a story character from Mojang’s game. The name is a fan-created label, and the sources behind it are user-made content plus one third-party catalog entry for a Marketplace cosmetic.
Who the name points to
The Purple Guy label comes from Five Nights at Freddy’s, where the character is a purple-clad antagonist. Minecraft skin listings identify the design as William Afton. A July 12, 2023 skin page on MinecraftSkins.com describes Purple Guy as William Afton and as Springtrap, another name tied to the same franchise character. MinecraftSkins.com, “Purple guy | Minecraft Skin,” July 12, 2023
A second MinecraftSkins.com listing, published November 25, 2023, calls the design “Purple Guy or William Afton” and says it draws on the “save them” minigame from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. MinecraftSkins.com, “Purple Guy | Minecraft Skin,” November 25, 2023 Both listings are created by skin authors, not by the franchise’s developers, so they show how players use the name rather than an official identification.
Why the name shows up in Minecraft
Minecraft has a large community of creators who build Five Nights at Freddy’s content inside the game. Roleplay videos are a common format. A 2016 FNAF roleplay video by The Pals, titled “Freddy Fazbear Origins – WHO IS PURPLE GUY? (Minecraft FNAF Roleplay) #7,” uses the phrase in its title and describes a FNAF-themed roleplay world. The Pals, “Freddy Fazbear Origins – WHO IS PURPLE GUY? (Minecraft FNAF Roleplay) #7,” April 2, 2016

That video is a fan production. It shows the character’s presence in Minecraft community content from at least 2016, but it does not show any change to the game itself.
Is Purple Guy a native Minecraft character?
No source establishes Purple Guy as a standard Minecraft mob, boss, or story character. Every Minecraft-side appearance found in the available sources is a player-made skin, a roleplay build or video, or a catalog cosmetic. If you encounter Purple Guy in a Minecraft world, it is almost certainly a skin or a map created by a community member.

The Bedrock Marketplace cosmetic
One third-party catalog, Bedrock Explorer, lists a Minecraft Bedrock Marketplace item called Purple Guy. It is described as a wearable hood credited to Pixel Smile Studios, with a reported launch date of February 1, 2024. Bedrock Explorer, “Purple Guy by Pixel Smile Studios – Minecraft Bedrock Marketplace Explorer”
That is a catalog report, not an official Minecraft announcement, and the available sources do not confirm the item’s current status. Marketplace listings can be changed or removed, so check the in-game Marketplace before assuming you can buy it. Treat the date as the catalog’s reported launch date, not as a verified release record.

Using the name in your own searches
If you are looking for the Minecraft version specifically, add “skin” or “roleplay” to the search. “Minecraft Purple Guy skin” will surface player skins, while “Minecraft FNAF roleplay Purple Guy” will surface roleplay videos. Searching only for “Purple Guy” will mix in results about the franchise character, which is usually what the name refers to in the first place.
For the official Marketplace item, search inside the game’s Marketplace rather than relying on outside listings.
