There is no single best Pokémon team for every Scarlet and Violet battle format. For official VGC doubles under Regulation Set I, three current archetypes worth considering are Miraidon hyper offense, Kyogre Trick Room, and Koraidon sun—but the available evidence does not establish one as the overall winner. Choose a format first, then build for its rules and battle structure.
Which Scarlet and Violet format are you playing?
“Best team” means different things depending on the rules. Official VGC is a doubles tournament format. Battle Stadium Singles is bring-six, choose-three: you register six Pokémon, then select three for each battle. Smogon singles formats are generally bring-six, choose-six. A roster built for one format may not translate to another.

Pokémon Showdown’s competitive introduction explains these format distinctions and recommends identifying popular threats your team cannot handle, then adding checks or counters. It is a useful general team-building resource, not a current Scarlet and Violet regulation schedule.
What rules apply to current Ranked Battles?
The official Pokémon Scarlet and Violet regulations page identifies Regulation Set I as beginning January 5, 2026, and continuing until the end of service. The page says regulations define the rules for Ranked Battles and official online competitions. For Regulation I, the rules include:
#1 Best Overall
- New Pokémon to Discover - Learn new details about Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly—the three Pokémon from which you’ll choose your first partner—along with other wonderful new Pokémon, including the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon!
- The World of Pokémon Has Evolved - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.
- You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
- A Deeper Experience with Multiplayer* Gameplay - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allow multiplayer gameplay with up to four players. Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!
- Meet the characters - As one of the main characters, you’ll set off on your adventure. Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Who knows what kind of story awaits you? For the first time in the series, one of two different professors will appear in your game depending on the version you choose to play.
- Eligible Pokémon come from the Paldea, Kitakami, and Blueberry Pokédex ranges, along with additional eligible Pokémon listed by the official rules.
- You may include no more than two restricted special Pokémon.
- Pokémon are set to level 50 for battle.
- Duplicate held items are not allowed on the same team.
Check the official Regulation Set I rules when checking a roster’s legality; eligibility is not simply a matter of whether a Pokémon can be obtained in the game.
Three Regulation I VGC archetypes to consider
These are examples for official doubles, not universal recommendations. A 2026 VGC Trainer guide presents them alongside usage data it attributes to Smogon’s competitive ladder at the 1760+ rating tier. That is a third-party ladder snapshot—not an official tournament ranking or a controlled comparison of team strength.
Rank #2
- Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
- Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities.
- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
| Archetype | Six Pokémon | Core plan |
|---|---|---|
| Miraidon hyper offense | Miraidon, Rillaboom, Incineroar, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Whimsicott, Raging Bolt | Fast offense, with Whimsicott providing Tailwind and Incineroar and Rillaboom offering Fake Out support. |
| Kyogre Trick Room | Kyogre, Lunala, Incineroar, Amoonguss, Indeedee-F, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike | A slower plan built around Trick Room and support. |
| Koraidon sun | Koraidon, Zamazenta-Crowned, Rillaboom, Tornadus, Incineroar, Smeargle | Sun offense with Tailwind as an additional speed option. |
The same guide reports these usage figures for its stated Smogon 1760+ ladder data: Incineroar 42.3%, Miraidon 28.9%, Rillaboom 28.7%, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike 28.1%, and Zamazenta-Crowned 21.7%. Those figures describe Pokémon usage in the guide’s data, not win rates or the odds that any one six-Pokémon team will succeed. The guide does not establish that any of the three archetypes is the best overall.
See the VGC Trainer Regulation I team guide for its archetype descriptions and reported ladder figures.

- Only one code for a Hisuian Zoroark can be used in either the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. Upon purchase of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, an email with your code will be sent to the email address registered to your Nintendo Account. From the in-game menu, go to the Poké Portal, then select Mystery Gift, select Get with Code/Password, and then enter your code.
- The Mystery Gift option can be found within the Poké Portal menu option in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet game. (This occurs after about 1 to 1.5 hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.) An internet connection and a Nintendo Account is required to redeem the item in game. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.
How to choose between the teams
Start with legality and format, then decide which game plan you want to pilot. The sample teams illustrate three distinct approaches: fast offense, Trick Room, and sun with Tailwind. The cited sources do not measure which is easiest for beginners, so treat comfort with a plan as a practical preference rather than a performance guarantee.
- Check legality: Confirm every Pokémon and held item against the intended regulation, including the limit of two restricted Pokémon and the ban on duplicate held items in Regulation I.
- Match the battle structure: A VGC doubles team must function in doubles; a Battle Stadium Singles player registers six and brings three, while the described Smogon singles format brings all six.
- Choose a speed plan: Decide whether you want to press fast offense, set Trick Room, or use sun offense with Tailwind as another speed option.
- Look for uncovered threats: Ask what popular opposing Pokémon or strategies your roster struggles to handle, and whether the team has a check or counter. Pokémon Showdown recommends this kind of threat-focused team building.
- Play the team enough to evaluate it: Pilot comfort is a real consideration, but it is not a substitute for matchup coverage or proof of competitive results.
So, which team should you use?
If you mean Regulation I VGC doubles, the Miraidon, Kyogre, and Koraidon lineups are concrete starting points with different plans. Select one based on the style you want to play, verify its legality, and assess its matchups. There is not enough evidence to name one as the best across Scarlet and Violet formats—or even to declare one of these three the clear Regulation I winner.
